The 29th annual Heritage Day of Portugal will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, June 4, in the House of Representatives Chamber of the Massachusetts State House.

The statewide event recognizes people of Portuguese heritage who help make Massachusetts a better place, as well as Portuguese community advocates, regardless of ethnicity, who have helped Portuguese people advance in the state or across the United States.

President of the Regional Government of the Azores Vasco Alves Cordeiro will serve as this year’s guest of honor. Vasco Cordeiro was elected last November. Prior to that he held different government positions in the Azores and helped strengthen the links with the State of Massachusetts and the Portuguese Community.

"It's a true honor to participate, as President of the Government of the Azores, in this initiative which will celebrate the role that the Portuguese community played and continues to play in the development of the state of Massachusetts,” said Vasco Cordeiro. “I am sure that will also be a moment to remember and recognize the particular contributions of the Azorean community in this process.”

The event includes a presentation of the Heritage Day of Portugal Medallion to individuals who have excelled or served as role models in their Portuguese communities, and is followed by refreshments in the Great Hall.

State Sen. Marc R. Pacheco, D-Taunton, who is co-chair to the Portuguese American Legislative Caucus, along with Rep. Antonio F.D. Cabral, D-New Bedford, said a free bus ride will be offered for residents interested in attending the celebration. It will depart from the Bloom Bus Terminal, 10 Oak St., Taunton, at 7:30 a.m. on June 4. It will then depart from the State House that afternoon at 2 p.m. Seats are limited; residents should call Pacheco’s office at 617-722-1551 to make reservations.

“Heritage Day of Portugal is an opportunity to recognize the Portuguese-American community’s contributions to our neighborhoods, cities and towns, and to the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” Cabral said.

“It is always an honor to recognize Portuguese Americans who have made their community and their Commonwealth proud,” Pacheco added. “The Heritage Day of Portugal allows us to celebrate our Portuguese identity together, but also to share our rich culture with the rest of the state.”
