Google users in Portugal will find today, June 10th – Day of Portugal, a new “doodle” featuring the Galo de Barcelos [Rooster of Barcelos] one of the most iconic representations of the country, associated with Portugal as a tourism destination.

The popular symbol of Portugal originated from an old legend that tells the story of a mythic rooster that saved the life of an innocent foreigner who, while visiting the Portuguese town of Barcelos, was wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to die.

In the recent past, Google has doodled Portuguese personalities and symbols, namely poets Fernando Pessoa and Antero de Quental, painter Amadeo de Souza Cardozo, architect Cassiano Branco, caricaturist Bordalo Pinheiro, and fado singer Amália Rodrigues.

The Day of Portugal, celebrated June 10th, is a Portuguese national holiday dedicated to honoring the life of Luís de Camões, Portugal’s national poet who died on the 10th of June 1580. Camões wrote Os Lusiadas, Portugal’s national epic poem celebrating the country’s 16th century maritime achievements.

Since 1998, doodles are known as the decorative changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists and scientists.

When doodles were first created, nobody had anticipated how popular and integral they would become to the Google search experience. Nowadays, many users excitedly anticipate the release of each new doodle and some even collect them.

According to the legend the accused did die because the roasted rooster sang after his execussion. The accused was a Galician passing in Barcelos as a Santiago pelgrin walking the "portuguese way" to Compostela.
