Palermitans. A lot of them look like they could be family or friends of mine. Too diverse to be anywhere else in Italy.

Nope. They don't even look Portuguese.

Sicilians for sure.

Sikeliot
06-12-2013, 03:53 PM
They are Sicilians from Caltanissetta.

alfieb
06-12-2013, 03:54 PM
Wow. I knew Nissa had Levantine and Greek phenos but didn't realize it was nearly as diverse as Palermo.

Sikeliot
06-12-2013, 03:57 PM
How much Greek input in Caltanissetta? I can't find that there were any ancient Greek colonies, although it would not surprise me if ancient Greeks eventually expanded beyond their traditional colonies.

I see Caltanissetta as an extension of Palermo, and Enna as an extension of Catania. There is no "Central Sicily" to me.

Gela was founded by Rhodians and Cretans. My best friend is from there. It is the largest town in the province.

Southern coastal Caltanissetta is heavily Greek, but inland I would assume has more Carthaginian and pre-Greek Neolithic, and maybe some Norman too.

What is Agrigento like? I know there were Greek settlements there too.

Yeah, Valley of the Temples is in Agrigento. Well-preserved Greek ruins. Some of the best anywhere to be found in the Mediterranean.

I've spent a good amount of time in Agrigento proper, but not much in the suburbs. Nice town. Among my favorites in Western Sicily.

Would you say most people in Agrigento look Greek?

alfieb
06-12-2013, 04:08 PM
No, I'd say it's a mix of Greek and Levantine.

Take Angelino Alfano for example. Head of the party Berlusconi founded, The People of Freedom. Native of Agrigento. I say he is more Phoenician.

I've been told that the ancient Phoenicians would have been genetically akin to Cypriots, and that modern Levantines are shifted toward Arabia due to the Arab conquest.

Therefore, since Cypriots don't cluster that far from Sicilians, it's conceivable that western Sicilians could be mostly Phoenician/Carthaginian and that their Norman imput makes the difference between them and a Cypriot genetically.

Ancient Levantines like Phoenicians would have looked more like East Med than what Levantines look like today. Today's Levantines have Arabian admixture. The ancient Phoenicians would not have looked much different than East Med types in Europe.

In this case is better say: Phoenician and Greek look!

Well that's basically what is implied.

Is it true if you go up into the mountains in inland Sicily, you find whole villages that are blue eyed and blonde?

Whole villages with blonde and blue eyed? :D In which legend?

Whole villages with blonde and blue eyed? :D In which legend?

A poster who was once here (Toretto1989) who was from Apulia told me in center of the island are whole villages that are blue eyed and blonde, and that people in the inland part of Sicily up in the mountains are much lighter than those on the coasts.

Mirko

He was from Apulia... ;) Whole villages? NO! A higher percentage? YES!

Sikeliot
06-12-2013, 05:18 PM
So you do believe people in the center of Sicily are lighter than on the coasts? Why? Like, what historically. To me I'd assume the opposite.

Also, when you say lighter do you mean generally Nordic looking, or just light in pigmentation but with standard Sicilian features?

Oh I see. So Normans went more inland and not on the coast?

I assumed light pigmented Sicilians up in the mountains were naturally occurring, since mountainous areas tend to be lighter pigmented by virtue of natural adaptation.

Mirko

Yes, as i know Normans went more in the inland part of the isle. City like Palermo have an higher percentage of light people even with nordic apparence.

Palermo has more Phoenician influence too. It seems like they have more Phoenician and more Norman both at the expense of Greek. Whereas eastern Sicily has more Greek, and almost no Norman and a smaller Phoenician input.

The Phoenician domain was for sure much longer than the norman, but the norman was more recent. Generally i can agree with your assumption.

But I firmly believe nearly all Sicilians have at least a quarter of Greek ancestry. It'd surprise me if not.
