Biden meets with Kosovo's prime minister, urges quick action on deal to normalize Serbia ties
WASHINGTON — Vice President Joe Biden is urging Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci (HAH'-shihm THAH'-chee) to move quickly to carry out a deal to normalize relations with Serbia.
The White House says Biden met with Thaci in Washington on Monday and told him the U.S. continues to support Kosovo's independence and sovereignty.
Kosovo declared independence in 2008 but Serbia rejected the move. The prime ministers of Serbia and Kosovo reached a tentative deal in April to normalize ties. The European Union-moderated plan could end years of tensions and put the Balkan rivals on a path to EU membership.
The White House says Biden commended Thaci's political courage in forging the deal and said it's important that the agreement be fully put in place so both nations can pursue peace and prosperity.
