The Danish government will give Tk1.58bn (Danish Krone 110m) to Bangladesh as aid for tackling climate change. The aid will be given in three phases by 2015.

Svend Olling, the outgoing ambassador of Denmark in Bangladesh, informed the Environment Minister Hasan Mahmud of this in a meeting at the secretariat on Thursday.

The diplomat will leave Bangladesh soon, after completing his three years tenure in the country as an ambassador.

After the meeting with Svend Olling, Hasan Mahmud told reporters that Bangladesh is already working with Denmark to reduce the risk of climate change in the country. This donation would be used to reduce the risk of climate change, and for the implementation of various adaptation programmes.

Denmark will release Tk13.87m in first phase this year. It will be spent for water ejection management and the construction of dams in four coastal districts.

The remaining Tk138.75m will be released in two phases in 2014 and 2015. The money will be used for projects undertaken by Bangladesh Climate Change Resilience Fund and different ministries.
