If you know what a browser is, please participate in this poll. ;)

And ... any comments welcome on the strengths and weaknesses of any of them. Rants allowed as well. :coffee:

My browser of choice is Mozilla Firefox. I find to be most convenient.

At work, I am stuck with this stupid IE 7 that crashes all the time :p

I use mainly Firefox, then Opera and Chrome for a bit of fun ;). Home & work. Wouldn't touch IE with a proverbial ten-foot pole.

Unfortunately most work computers are limited to IE only. But at home I have gradually moved to Google Chrome. I like it, and now use it permanently. On the mobile phone I use the Opera Mini browser, which is very nice.

Ok, ok. What the hell am I missing here? All I have ever used is IE. I haven't had any problems and it seems to do what I want. I am curious now. I have a fast 2gb memory computer with a 1.66 gig processor I bought last year. Is it time to research a new browser too?

No ... not all browsers display webages in exactly the same way. Check it out!

For example, on IE I see that the Regional subfora's flags are outlined with a thick blue frame. It is not visible on Chrome or Firefox. Doesn't look good in IE. I may have to experiment with the templates in order to have this right in all the browsers.

It is definitely faster than IE, especially on a slow connection. But I guess nowadays with broadband everywhere, it doesn't really matter too much.

The add-ons are great, the designs are even better and the speed is tremendous.

The only down side is the memory leaks. But, meh!

Hmmm in the past few days I've been trying out different browsers for size.

I usually use Google Chrome, which has taken over from Internet Explorer for me. Sigurd mentioned Opera a day or so ago, which I tried. I was impressed ... they certainly have improved it since I first checked it out some 5 years ago.

But now I downloaded Apple's Safari browser (http://www.apple.com/safari/). I'm loving it! Speed seems faster than the others, and the visual clarity seems superior. Try it out! :thumb001:

Chrome is most definitely my browser of choice. I tried out Safari for some days and liked it, but I'm back again on Chrome. It seems to be the most user-friendly and clean of browsers. Speed excellent too. What I like about it, is that you can just type any word into the browser and it does a Wikipedia search. Quick and convenient.

This you can do with Opera too, and I guess with firefox too. In Opera you can add your own search and customise engines very easy. If Firefox dont have this option you could just simply search for "keyword wikipedia" for example.

Not quite the same. In Opera you must type the letter "w" before a word in order to Wikipedia search it. In Chrome you don't even have to do it. And in Firefox, there is a separate bar for searches. In Chrome it's all in one.

I never use IE. The only good reason for me to use it would be to test a page. Yet all the drop-downs etc work fine in the other browsers I use (Firefox, Opera and Chrome), 99.9% of the time :).

Or you could add wikipedia search engine and use it from the dropdown menu at the upper right, where you can change very quick and easy in which search engine you want to search. But its correct you can also use a letter in the adressbar to search, I usually do this with google... In Opera you also have all the search bars in one, as you say Chrome has.

Opera is one of the most secure, fastest and best browers in the world.obscure (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/obscure) as in the sense of arcane (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/arcane).

at that time, an accurate adjective
for a struggling browser
that, only months previous, ran banner-advertisments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_banner)
for revenue, but, had (that year) graduated
to surviving on google-revenue
thanks to contracting their default search-engine as google (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_search).

even today, several years after the conversation
described in the questioned post,

that browser continues to have a relatively miniscule user-base
as demonstrated by the two pie-charts
offered in the post.

secundus, how many forum-members
would characterise a browser as "one of the...best",
if it did not reveal all of the available forum-options

as recounted in the questioned post?

I’ve been using Firefox for five years. I’ve tried Opera, but it was cumbersome, because I use so many keyboard shortcuts which are different and have become engraved into my mind by habit. When I try to something similar which is by habit; it doesn’t work. There are too many extensions I use, so there’s that transition problem. I’ve wanted to try Chrome months ago but never installed it. I use Opera on my mobile phone. A new version came out a week ago for S60 OS.

Firefox with the following addons:

Adblock Plus (No ads.)
DownThemAll! (Download accelerator. The best I've ever found.)
Linkification (Converts text links to clickable ones. Very useful.)
Modify Headers (To fool certain sites into thinking I'm in America so I can stream content.)

Why is Konquerer on the list? It's hardly a full featured browser, and every Linux distribution has Firefox as the default anyway.

I use my good friend, Firefox. And when sometimes even Firefox is being a pain I just switch to Safari.
I used Google Chrome for a moment but it was crashing all the time so I have deleted Safari and Google Chrome (and I will delete IE) and will start using Firefox 3.6 and Opera 10.10

At home, I use Chrome, Firefox...and the merry old IE6, mainly to access Microsoft or these fucking sites popping-up windows to advice how bad and insecure it is (these jerks obviously cannot know I'm running Chrome or Firefox concurrently so I can savely access the suspicious places they're talkin about). And this hurts me, for it's like an old relative, maybe updated but always a good person, then here comes a strange to make joke of him in my own fucking face.

At office, I use what System Administrator -a guy worth tenth part of my computer knowledge- allows the others and me to use: currently IE6 over one o of these goddammed things called Intranets running on a fucking Windows 2000 set up on a bloody encrypted filesystem.

I use Firefox, Ocaasionally Chrome and Opera and Opera Mini on my phone. IE is crap in my opion and I don't like the look and feel of Chrome all that much and Opera is too "nosy" and weird.
I also use my own browsers which I occasionally make.

Everyone "knows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_meme)" that Chrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Chrome_OS), Firefox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Firefox) and Safari (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_(web_browser)) are all way more secure than Internet Explorer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer).

But what's the real story?

To find out, I first looked up Symantec (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symantec)'s twice-yearly Security Threat Report, which yeilded the total numbers of reported vulnerabilities for 2009: Firefox had the most at 169, followed by 94 for Safari, 45 for IE and 41 for Google Chrome. For most recent data, I turned to the United States Computer Emergency Rediness Team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Computer_Emergency_Readiness_Team) (US-CERT), which hosts the National Vulnerability Database, a searchable index of reported computer vulnerabilities. A search of data for a recent three-month period yeilded 51 such vulnerabilities for Safari (including both mobile and desktop versions), 40 for Chrome, 20 for Firefox and 17 for IE.

Such counts alone aren't the best way to measure a browser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_browser)'s security, however. A browser with 100 security flaws that are patched a day after being discovered is safer than a browser with only one exploit that hasn't been patched for months.

According to Symantec's report, the average window of vulnerability (the time between when the flaw is reported and when it's patched) in 2009 was less than a day for IE and Firefox, 2 days for Google Chrome and a whopping 13 days for Safari.

Clearly, Internat Explorer is doing fairly well. Nevertheless, you should still consider a few important factors before deciding to jump ship back to IE.

Stay updated. The second most common Web-based attack in 2009 exploited an IE security flaw patched way back in 2004 (the 2009 attack targeted unupdated PCs). The latest version of IE may be pretty safe, but ditch any earlier versions you have.

Your browser is only as secure as your plug-ins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plug-in_(computing)). Symantec found that Microsoft's ActiveX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActiveX) plug-in (enabled by default in IE) was the least secure with 134 vulnerabilities, followed by Java SE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Platform,_Standard_Edition) with 84, Adobe Reader (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Acrobat) with 49, Apple QuickTime (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime) with 27 and Adobe Flash Player (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Flash_Player) with 23. The moral: be careful at sites that use browser plug-ins.

It's tough to be on top. IE still has the biggest piece of the browser pie, meaning that cybercriminals are more likely to target IE than any other browsers.

I disagree about Chrome being a secure browser. One time when I was on my laptop I had decided to visit a forum dedicated to Windows 7 for some help on a certain issue I was having. I was using the Chrome browser at that time, and when I entered that website url then my laptop suddenly got attacked by a virus. A first in my two years of laptop ownership (when I was using Firefox for the first two I never got a virus). I was able to eradicate it. However I learned my lesson and went back to Firefox immediately after.

I'm trying Yandex now. So far so good. It seems to combine some of the better features of Chrome and Opera. Hopefully it doesn't crash all the time like Opera though. One bad point in the English version - the auto translate asks whether I want English pages translated into Russian and there is no way of changing it other than turning it off. It's only a minor complaint though.

I've converted to Yandex too. The English version has a few annoying bugs such as the automatic translation only being to Russian and only an American English dictionary. On the whole it is good though and the turbo mode reduces bandwidth use and makes pages load much faster, so I prefer it to Chrome now.

chrome regular

fiferfox for downloading from rapidshare or other sites because chrome doesnt support on them

yandex and opera standard browsers. Opera is good to download videos to mp4 format on youtube with a certain addon, it also emails you directly at your browser if you get a new email. Its also good for torrents as well. Yandex is the most secure browser it has direct kaspersky protection, its probably the only way to get anything free from kaspersky. Both also have adobe block.

fiferfox, cuz of adons like net videohunter you can download any video but only to flv, therefore its the exact quality.

sea monkey and ie are for certain sites. As even sometimes sites dont work with fiferfox.

With a Trident "engine"? No thanks, it is no better than an IE skin which is essentially what it is. I've made such a browser before, Trident is still awful regardless of whatever facade is used and makes for a poor browser.
