Dozens of protesters disrupted a tour of Sicily's new satellite system, Wednesday 19 June. They are furious about the ultra-high-frequency satellite network, Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), in Niscemi, Sicily, that could be used by the US Navy. Protesters claim that since the station is there, the cases of cancer rose exponentially amongst the local population.

As one of the protester said: "There are a lot of sick people. The level of tumours, of leukaemia, of lymphomas has increased exponentially. This is alarming for us, but only this! This base is not only a military base, it has a war aim and this is really worrying for us".

As a scientific researcher involved in the protests stated: "I have equipment to measure the signal identical to Arpa's equipment, we compared them to be sure. I know that Yesterday there was a very strong and dangerous signal, there were there in that house. This morning this signal was not there."

Three existing ground stations of MUOS are already located in desert areas of Virginia, Hawaii and Australia, but in Sicily the location is five kilometres from the small town of Niscemi and close to a civilian population. Construction of the ground station began in 2010. In addition to the new satellite network, Niscemi has the distinction of being situated 10 kilometres away from one of the largest industrial settlements in southern Italy, the Gela Refinery.

Developers include the United States Department of Defense, who say it would be an ideal way to link its military forces around the world. Opponents claim the high radiation caused by the electromagnetic fields could prove deadly to human bodies. Electromagnetic pollution acts invisibly on human populations, yet MUOS challengers say there could be a link to cancer, autism, tumours, lymphomas along with changes to human DNA, effecting future generations.

The Mothers Against MUOS organisation protested March 30, 2013, with 10,000 demonstrating in Niscemi, Sicily against the proposed ultra-high-frequency satellite network. Many protesters received criminal charges for resisting arrest and damaging property during their pickets.
