The history of Vologda lace goes back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, although lacing has existed since the first quarter of the fourteenth century. It is believed that lacing initially originated in Europe, with Italy and Belgium considered the oldest centers of lacing. The “start” of lacing refers to the 1820’s, when serfs began weaving dresses and lingerie near Vologda, imitating the designs and styles of Western Europe. In the days of serfdom, all major estates were lace "factories". These lace products were then delivered to St. Petersburg and Moscow. One of these factories was owned by Zasetskii. His estate was three miles from the village of Vologda. Here, serfs would weave subtle lace trims for dresses and lingerie, again imitating Western European patterns and styles. After serfdom ended, the landlords’ workshops were moved to the people, and it became a kind of folk art, reflecting the needs and tastes of broad sections of the local population. In 1893, Vologda lace craft was popular among approximately 4,000 masters. This art grew very popular, very quickly, and by 1912 over 40,000 people were making laces.
