Kosovo FM: Egypt recognizes Kosovo's secession from Serbia

Kosovo's foreign minister says Egypt has recognized the territory's 2008 secession from Serbia, an important move as it seeks eventual membership in the United Nations.

Enver Hoxhaj said Wednesday the act "marks a great milestone for Kosovo's statehood."

He tells The Associated Press that "this is a new momentum and the point of no return."

Hoxhaj said Egypt is the 100th country to recognize Kosovo. But, the validity of recognitions from Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe and Mali have been disputed.

Hoxhaj said Kosovo will apply for membership in the U.N., but that is unlikely to happen while Serbia's Vuk Jeremic is president of the U.N. General Assembly.

Serbia does not recognize Kosovo. Russia backs Serbia in the dispute over Kosovo and has veto power in the U.N.
