(AFP) -- Denmark's public prosecution authority said on Thursday it would charge 11 men with "terror funding" for raising 130 million kroner (17.4 million euros, $22.7 million) for Kurdish rebels.

"This is the most comprehensive criminal case on terrorism that we have so far had in Denmark," chief prosecutor Lise-Lotte Nilas said in a statement.

"The public prosecutor's main point is that very large sums were raised systematically over several years for the terrorist organisation PKK," she added, referring to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, Turkey's separatist rebels.

The accused had close and long-lasting relationships with the organisation, the Danish Prosecution Service said.

The PKK, listed as a terrorist group by Turkey and much of the international community, took up arms for self-rule in the Kurdish-majority southeast of Turkey in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed 45,000 lives.

Six of the men stand accused of having actively taken part in collecting money in Denmark, while four others are also accused of distributing funds to other European countries. One man is also accused of having sent money to the PKK in 2006 and 2007.

The maximum penalty for raising funds for a terrorist organisation in Denmark is 10 years in prison, but the prosecution will not announce what sentence it is seeking until criminal proceedings begin this autumn, it said.
