First Russian Alphabet Book by Karion Istomin

Karion Istomin was a celibate priest and then a hegumen at the Chudov Monastery. In 1690s, he compiled the Small Alphabet Book and Big Alphabet Book for Tsarevich Alexei Petrovich, son of Peter the Great. Material in the Alphabet book was expressed in verse and pictures were used as means for facilitating the process of learning. An engraver of the State Armoury, Leonty Bunin, сut the first hand-made Alphabet Book by a pointed chisel on copper. 106 copies of the book were printed in 1694.
