Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said on Al Jazeera TV this evening that Malta had made Europe 'wake up and smell the coffee' on the migration problem.

He also insisted that Libya should not be seen as part of the problem but an essential part of the solution t othe migration crisis.

Dr Muscat said the overwhelming feeling among the Maltese was that the country had been abandoned by everyone with regard to migration.

The government had therefore declared it would consider all options in order to make Europe wake up, and it succeeded in doing so.

As he was speaking, Dr Muscat said, the AFM was rescuing some 160 people at sea.

"We cannot continue to do this on our own, and we therefore took a conscious decision that unless something is done, we will consider all options," Dr Muscat said.

"When you are left on your own, and after years and years of empty talk and very little solidarity you have to consider all options," he said, while reiterating that Malta always respected its international obligations and would continue to do so.

"We have contributed the equivalent of 3% of our GDP to the EU bailouts. Once the EU was so quick in rescuing the banks, it should be even quicker to rescue people at sea," Dr Muscat said.

He said that the arrival of 2,000 people last year on an island of 400,000 was the equivalent, relative to population size, to the arrival of 100,000 in Belgium or a million in Germany. That, surely, was not sustainable.

"We are making proposals for more solidarity and we need to bring Libya into the equation, it is not part of the problem but part of the solution," Dr Muscat said.

Dr Muscat described the calls he gets at night about people needing rescue at sea as 'nightmarish' and insisted that this is not a Maltese problem, but a problem of the Mediterranean and Europe.

Smart enough not to post irrelevant shit.

Meaning that I would love the United States? Of course I wouldn't since it's multiracial shithole. However I'd be glad if you said something relevant to the topic rather than posting about internet warriors and what not.

I guess Europeans should provide Libyans with help to stop migration from there.

There was a bi-lateral agreement made (Malta and Italy) with Libya that falls under EU/UN regulations that states we have the right to send Illegal immigrants back to Libya in case these immigrants do not have right for refugee status or do not hold any documents, which is like that in most of the cases. What has happened with this agreement is beyond me. However those traitors that are saying that Libya isn't safe enough, I wonder why flights are still being made if it's the case??

Libya itself suffers from Immigrants (mostly Egyptians btw). They use now restrict laws from giving visa to Egyptians, so i believe this agreement of sending immigrants back to Libya won't work really. I think you should give them some Speedboats, Weapons, ect... to help them to stop immigrants before they reach Europe.

That would also be my idea, the problem should be stopped from the source, not after they have left. But EU is hard headed and doesn't see past it's nose. They want Malta and Southern EU countries to be the barrier, human rights issue my arse. I remember how Germany reacted when Italy sent about 200 Negroes to Germany...they were outraged. Hypocrisy at it's best.

Either send them back as soon as they arrive (that way they won't dare to cross the seas anymore), or fight the problem at it's source...or else EU will have to act how it preaches and take all the illegal immigrants that arrive. It can't keep on going like that for Malta.

the "human rights' activists or in other words anarchists are a problem, and the court of human right are the main problem imo.

Can you blame us for wanting that? Its also how we agreed to handle those kind of things, every state has to deal with those at its shores. Italy sending us those negros was a blant violation of treaties and in case they do it again I would be for reintroducing border controlls for Italians. This being said, we could do more: like sending specialists and equipment maybe have some sort of joint navy institution to stop those bpats before coming close to EU waters etc.

Should send all Libyan refugees to France, after all it was their planes and bombs that made Gaddafi loose.

Yes, and the European Union is being hypocrite by not letting us send them back, like my OP says, if Germany wouldn't like the equivalent of a million illegal africans each year, you shouldn't be preaching to us about human rights in the first place. But excuse me for saying Germany, cause I don't hold a grudge against Germans, only Eurocrats.

No offense taken. I personally believe they shouldnt even be allowed to set a foot on European soil. Those practice would get ugly at first but may as well save more of them in the end. Since once they realised there is no chance, they wont try to cross the sea and drown trying.

Don't be such a dumbass like your American friend here.

Save EU? EU is not something to be saved, but our call will surely make noise with other EU member states and inspire people to take a stand against the fucking Eurocrats. Generation Idantitaire, Golden Dawn, EDL, we are all together against them Eurocrats. Malta might be a tiny fucking Nation, but the fact that we are proud to have our cultural Identity already makes us better than a fucking Ibiza.
