New research suggests cavemen painted similar patterns and figures as they were strung out on drugs

PREHISTORIC paintings the world over feature eerily similar geometric patterns as they may have been painted by cavemen high on natural hallucinogens, according to new research.

A paper published by researchers Tom Froese, Alexander Woodward and Takashi Ikegami from the University of Tokyo seeks to debunk the long-held belief that many prehistoric paintings the world over are smiliar due to the way the human brain was back then learning to process images.

Rather it argues, many cultures created rituals around the painting activity which involved the artist consuming a natural plant or herb with hallucinogen that stirred the creative process.
