A study (http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2013-07/sfeb-sst062613.php) conducted by Society for Experimental Biology (SEB) discovered that starfish use their primitive eyes located at the tip of their arms to navigate their location.

The research was led by Dr. Anders Garm at the Marine Biological Section of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. It showed that the eyes of starfish are image-forming and might be an important stage in the evolution of eyes.

Starfish with and without eyes were picked by the researchers from their food rich habitat, the coral reef and placed on the sand bottom a metre away where they would starve. The researchers observed that the starfish with the eyes started going towards the coral reef and the one without eyes was randomly moving around.
