An old lawnmower, a couple of rusty bikes... and a gravestone from the time of Alfred the Great?

It's not exactly what you'd expect to find in a garage clear-out.

But this extremely rare ninth-century relic was what auctioneers stumbled upon to their astonishment while they were valuing items at a house in Surrey.

LIFE AND DEATH IN THE DANELAW

Most Anglo-Saxons were farmers, living in wooden shacks, growing wheat and barley, and raising sheep and cows.
Archaeological evidence suggests the average life expectancy was in the 30s but an adult could live to 60 or even 70.
Viking raids started in Lindisfarne in Northumbria in 793AD.
In 865AD a full army stormed through Britain, taking three of the kingdoms of England - Northumbria, East Anglia and Mercia - before finally attacking the remaining Anglo-Saxon stronghold of Wessex.
There, under the leadership of King Alfred the Great (pictured above), the Saxons organised themselves and pushed back, eventually dividing Britain into Wessex to the West and Danelaw to the East.
