Portugal’s re-shuffled cabinet has been sworn in after the country’s president approved the changes including the promotion of the junior coalition party leader Paulo Portas to deputy prime minister.
President Anibal Cavaco Silva has backed
the shaky coalition lead by Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, ruling out a snap election following a dispute over austerity measures which had threatened to derail Lisbon’s bailout.
Paulo Portas had offered his resignation over the measures but has been persuaded to abandon his foreign office portfolio in return for coordinating talks with Lisbon’s EU and IMF lenders.
President Cavaco Silva is hoping the new-look government will now stay to the end of its term cooling weeks of political turmoil.
