Archaeologists in Turkey say they've made what could be one of the most important finds ever — a stone chest that may hold part of Jesus' cross.

Archaeologists excavating the site of an ancient church in Turkey believe they may have discovered a piece of Jesus' cross.

The wood fragment was found in a stone chest in the 1,350-year-old Balatlar Church in Turkey's Sinop province, Live Science (http://www.livescience.com/38615-archaeologists-find-relic-of-jesus-cross.html) reported.

"We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross, and we think it was [part of the cross on which Jesus was crucified]. This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far," Professor Gülgün Köroğlu, the head of the excavation, told Hurriyet Daily News.

She said the team believes the chest could have been a symbolic coffin for the relics of a holy person, NBC News reported. The chest has been moved from the site and will be examined in a laboratory.

Köroğlu said her team has been working at the church, built in the year 660, since 2009.
