Sotis Volanis is at least partially Gypsy is he not? I suspect many Greek singers may be part Gypsy since other Balkan performers often are, and modern "Balkan" popular music is Turkish-Gypsy influenced.

Sotis Volanis had denied Gypsy ancestry.

What's Turkish-Gypsy?

I mean Turkish AND Gypsy influenced. Why do you think Balkan pop music today sounds so Oriental?

Oke. Just making clear that Turkish and Gypsy music is not the same or similar.

We associate Balkan music with Gypsy music btw. Just saying.

This song is an example of what I mean. This type of music is clearly not native to the Balkans.

This is Arabesque. Arabic style music copied by Turks and neighbours.

Well it's not Balkan, Greek, etc. is my point. I would have associated it with Turkish influence or Gypsy.

Oriental music has mixed with gypsy music in the balkans, I think this is what Sikeliot means. But it's not as popular in Greece as it was. Hiphop, pop and romanian dance influenced music is what dominates the charts.

May be true for Greece but one guy I know from Serbia says in Serbia, all you hear nowadays is turbo-folk music and it sounds Oriental.

Not-Balkan does not equal Turkish. Just because you know jackshit about the history and culture of that region doesn't mean you can shove everything that sounds or looks foreign on Turks or Gypsies. This is Arab music. Period.

I don't really see the Gypsy in the guy.

Azalea

Ontopic.

The guy who everyone claims to be looking Gypsy could be normal Turkish. I don't see much (or any) foreign influence in him. If he really sticks out in Greece then I am guessing Greece is some sort of Nordic walhalla.

The first girl is just a typical example of too much make-up and tanning. I am sure she looks very different without all the spraytan and make-up.

It's in certain clubs, not everywhere. Anyways the singing style and melody is present in the Balkans in one shape or form since before the Turks set foot on our soil. People like to have misconceptions of what we are, and some Balkan people have big chip on shoulder and try as hard to be regular european.

But in the end this is our roots:

Ποιοι άλλοι έχεις δει να το παραδέχοντε εκτός από κατι Παιτέρηδες που φαίνοντε από χιλιόμετρο; Σπάνια το παραδέχοντε, ακόμη και η Φουρέιρα μας προέκυψε Βραζιλιάνα. Μήπως είσαι κανένας Αλβανός ή κανα epirot και μας το κρύβεις και συ;

Oh no doubt there is Ottoman influence in the music. But modern popular Balkan music sounds like it belongs in Baghdad or Damascus.. surely it's artificial crap and not anything that would have evolved naturally in the Balkans even with Ottoman influence present.

You should get a ban for talking so much crap.

Why? it is alien to the region and it *is* crap. It is usually gypsies that love this type of music. For both gypsies and this crapish music we have Turks to thank for. They "enriched" us culturally lol

Gypsy music sounds completely different from Arabic music.

Besides that, Balkan music has it's own sound and doesn't resemble modern Arabic music in any way. Having 'Arabic' influence doesn't make something Arabic. There are tons of other influences in Balkan music too.

Wow. I still don't see the Gypsy. The ones I've seen look nothing like this. Maybe I should get out more. Bulgarian sounds better though.

I've heard a lot of Greek singers are Gypsies (and Asian Greeks too).

Balkan music is not similar to one another. Maybe some songs are copied, like the Serbian song called Kida Me (tearing me) is a copy of the Greek song called Pare me (not sure what it means though).

also the balkanites and others saying "turko-gypsy" as if that is the worst insult, and often associate turks and gypsies with something bad and to be hated etc. roma more then turk but also turk is to be hated and foreign etc. it is just as part of the balkan since 500 years, and i like orientalic music (arbesque) performed by roma and or coming from turkey who brought it from the islamic world
