Yes, but at the same time, it makes me wonder.. did the "Ashkenazi" look develop in Israel itself before the diaspora, or did it develop in Europe due to admixture with other things? I would be inclined to think the latter, but then someone like Leon Panetta looks Jewish to me, but I doubt his look has any Germanic influence to it.

I think it's the other way around. I'd guess that a group of Israelites were expelled by the Romans and ended up in southern Italy. Some assimilated, but if anything the women probably ended up taking southern Italian men, and then the children were considered Jews. This population probably moved northward and eventually would settle in the Rhine.

I think the difference in the two populations who were essentually one 100 years ago might be due to 2 or 3 generations of intermarriage with Russians/Ukrainians etc in the 20th century but am only guessing.

Yeah, about 53% of Ukrainian Jews have blue eyes, I'm not sure about Russian, or Belarusian Jews, but I guess the numbers would be similar. My grandfather was full Ashkenazi but he told me when I was a kid that he knew he had some native Russian ancestry.
