The canyon, which is as deep as 800 metres in places, is thought to predate the ice sheet, which has itself been around for millions of years. It can be seen in the centre of this 3D visualisation of the Greenland bedrock for the northern half of the island

A 466 mile-long chasm on the same scale as parts of the Grand Canyon has been discovered beneath the Greenland ice sheet.

The canyon, which is as deep as 800 metres in places, is thought to predate the ice sheet, which has itself been around for millions of years.

It has the characteristics of a meandering river channel, although it dwarfs the UK’s largest river, the Severn, which is less than half the length and far more shallow.
