Shanah Tovah :)

I offer this prayer in the New Year 5774, and wish for you, your families, friends, colleagues, and students a year of good health, renewal, and happiness.

May we hold lovingly in our thoughts
those who suffer from tyranny, subjugation, cruelty, and injustice,
and work every day towards the alleviation of their suffering.

May we recognize our solidarity
with the stranger, outcast, downtrodden, abused, and deprived,
that no human being be treated as “other,”
that our common humanity weaves us together
in one fabric of mutuality,
one garment of destiny.

May we pursue the Biblical prophet’s vision of peace,
that we might live harmoniously with each other
and side by side,
respecting differences,
cherishing diversity,
with no one exploiting the weak,
each living without fear of the other,
each revering Divinity in every human soul.

May we struggle against institutional injustice,
free those from oppression and contempt,
act with purity of heart and mind,
despising none, defrauding none, hating none,
cherishing all, honoring every child of God, every creature of the earth.

May the Jewish people, the state of Israel, and all peoples
know peace in this New Year,
And may we nurture kindness, love and compassion everywhere.

Rabbi John L. Rosove

Ahead of the New Year, Israel's government reported Monday that the Jewish state's population topped 8 million.

Of that number, 75.1 percent are Jewish, 20.7 percent are Arab Muslim and 4 percent are "other," a category that includes Christians.

During the past year, 163,000 new babies were born and 40,000 deaths were reported, accounting for a growth rate of 1.8 percent, which is in line with previous years.

In addition, the government reported there were 4.5 million departures from Israel during the past year and some 5 million people visited the country.

Peres' message is muddled. He implies Yom Kippur is before Rosh Hashanah and that Yom Kippur is meant to forget our mistakes. This is not a great greeting.

President Obama's is pretty generic. He loses points for having a jarring edit in the middle.

David Cameron's is only fair, with usual stuff about the peace process, but his ending about the British Jewish community is nice.

The IDF's message has stunning video clips and shows off the diversity of the army and navy. Pure hasbara - and that's a good thing.

Iranian president tweets Rosh Hashanah blessing to Jews
Hassan Rouhani's message to mark start of Jewish new year unexpected in Israel, which has identified Iran as security threat

Amid a global exchange of greetings and good wishes to mark Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, which began at sunset on Wednesday, there was one from a particularly surprising quarter.

Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani, tweeted: "As the sun is about to set here in #Tehran I wish all Jews, especially Iranian Jews, a blessed Rosh Hashanah." A picture of an Iranian Jew praying at a synagogue in Tehran accompanied the tweet.

According to a 2012 census, there are fewer than 9,000 Jews among Iran's population of about 75 million.

The message from Rouhani was unexpected in Israel, which has identified Iran as a huge threat to its security. It says the regime is developing a nuclear weapons programme that could be used to annihilate the Jewish state.

Rouhani, who was elected in June, has pledged to tone down the "hate rhetoric" used by his predecessor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Barack Obama, also sent new year greetings to Jews around the world, wishing them "shana tova" from the Great Synagogue in Stockholm during a stopover en route to the G20 summit in St Petersburg.

Other wellwishers included the British prime minister, David Cameron, who sent "best wishes to Jewish communities in the UK and around the world observing the high holy days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur".

His message continued: "At this important time for the Jewish faith let us join you in praying for a new year that will achieve progress towards a lasting peace for Israel and the Middle East."

Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the year 5774 in the Jewish calendar and about a month of religious holidays. Yom Kippur, the solemn day of atonement and fasting for Jews, begins at sunset next Friday. It is followed by Sukkot, or the Feast of the Tabernacles, an eight-day holiday in which observant Jews take meals in a sukkah, an outdoor structure traditionally covered in palm fronds.
