Saw this on ABF, thought it might interest the people here.

Some blogger at y-str.org disagrees with how 23andMe determines Neanderthal percentage, and made his own calculator based on Neanderthal DNA that you can compare your raw data with.

http://www.y-str.org/tools/neanderthal-calculator/

I'm curious as to what people here get for results.

I'm 16.67% Neanderthal according to it.

What was your 23andme percentage%

I think 17% is way high, you don't even have brow-ridges do you?

What was your 23andme percentage%

I think 17% is way high.

This calculator tends to give far higher results than 23andMe. My 23andMe result is 3.0%.

The background behind this calculator and how it works can be found here:
http://www.y-str.org/1-4-of-neanderthal-dna-in-eurasians-is-wrong/

23andMe supposedly determines Neanderthal-ness by differences in Euro and African DNA. This uses Neanderthal SNP markers.

It uses Interpretome's Neanderthal test.. I have 7 out of 42 SNPs which is 8.33%.. 23andMe it is 2.9%..

Since contrary to belief of every anthropologist on earth evolution is true, many of those africans do have neanderthal blood and we have proof of this in mike hammer et al paper. Especially since they came out of ME anyway. So yes the percentages are probably way off for 23andme.

Me: 3.57%
Father: 13.10%
Grandfather: 13.10%
Grandmother: 10.71%
Mother: 3.57%
Aunt: 7.14%

It's true my father certainly looks more neanderthal than the rest of us.

According to this calculator I'm 5,95% Neanderthal. On 23andme I'm 2.6% Neanderthal. No primitivus seal of approval for me, but it's an upgrade.

The tool is obsolete according to its creator, which is true since the results are very heterogenous. And he also clears up the wrong results you get from 23andme.

"Less useless" Felix's tools are the Neanderthal ancestry and the Denisova ancestry ones, but they don't tell you how much Neanderthal or Denisovan ancestry you may have.

Even in Academia it's not settled yet, so don't expect anything, the last paper so far being:
The complete genome sequence of a Neanderthal from the Altai Mountains (http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nature12886.html)

17.86%, now it makes sense why I want to smash shit sometimes. I'm just blaming genetics.

11.90% Neanderthal, this calculator is definitely inaccurate. 42 Out-of-Africa SNPs out of millions and millions of SNPs in human genome alone, renders this tool useless for deducing accurate estimations.

I guess a better description of this would be "percentage of known neanderthal marker alleles that you possess".
