If I see a guy wearing a vest over his shirt I think he is so cool and preppy looking.

Oxymoron.

First type is hot...but only if they can pull it off without looking too gay.

No. I think the only people who wear vests here are bullfighters.

I sometimes wear this kind of vest.

But not the kinds shown above.

I prefer to wear nothing at all, except underwear.

That vest is a gillet, Despot. ^

With respect to the two pictures that you posted, what you meant when you wrote "vest" is a waistcoat, or a tank-top respectively.

I used to wear a turquoise and yellow shot-silk waistcoat at school, with a woven and yes, it was fun. I wore a bright green short coat, and I would have worn a maroon tie. I was fourteen years' old in Sixth Form as I had been raised up two years. It was great not to have to wear school uniform anymore and, yes, my personal style was absolutely wild and I hennaed my hair a bright auburn colour.

I like shot (two-tone) silks with woven patterns.

Currently being enjoyed by my mother is a fabulous 19th Century red and blue Chinese silk cravat with the most marvellous pattern. I am hoping that it might last a few more generations.

I do not wear waistcoats at all these days because I have too much body heat, but this looks sumptuous:

What about 'sheepskin' vests? ;)

Correct, however for the highlighted garment we normally call 'sleeveless jumpers'. Tank tops, tend to be what women wear to the beach (i think)?
