He was a famous cyclist in the 90's, he made himself popular on the Tour de France 1994 by winning two race and being third in Paris on the podium.

Wikipedia says he is latvian (born in Riga), I'm being curious now, is he an ethnic latvian ? His name sounds so russian. Thank in advance for the answer.

The name Piotr is Russian. In Latvian it would have been Pēteris.

As for the surname, doesn't sound quite latvian, Roy must be right. I still wonder a bit though.

There is no "ethnic" Latvian surnames ending in -ov.

For example, check out a list of famous Latvians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latvians) to get an idea of what their names sound like.

Among them, you will find some "-ov" s preceded by a Russian first name, e.g. Mikhail Baryshnikov, Vladimirs Petrovs, e.t.c...

He is a Russian born in Riga!! Real Latvian have not names like that --- look at list of Absinthe :icon_yes: You know , we adjust foreign names to our Latvian name system also! The name of Hitler in Latvia is Ādolfs Hitlers and Stalin is Josifs Stalins....and in Latvia it is Baraks Obama and Dzordzs Bušs for George Bush

Chef of Apricity is Loki ---- in Latvia "Lokijs ". :D That is our name system okay?? It is very easy to make out real Latvian and Russian Latvian when looking at the name

Not true, i have a friend and his name is Genādijs. I guess thats russian name but he's latvian. During summer when i was with a friend in Talsi i met a girl and her name was Hanna, thats a german name, right? But she's latvian.
It's really hard to tell because people give their children names what they want/like. Same is with surnames. For example mine is Miķelsons, that can be some kind of scandinavian or smthn, Grobovs, Himmels, Čuškins, Kizino.
I know a lot of people who have russian-like surnames because of fictive marriages to escape deportation.

But she's latvian.I hear first time in my life, that a guy with name Genādijs is Latvian by ethnicity. "Genādijs" sounds foreign, already by sounding. Hanna also definately is foreign name, because letter "h" is unusual in Latvian language.

Ok, i guess what i was trying to say was that name does not change what you are, your nationality/ethnicity.
For example if i give my child a name Takeru Susumi that does not make him japanese, but i like that name so i give it to him.

We were talking about surnames and not about prenames!! :rolleyes2: Latvians can have all prenames but surnames show from where people do come. And no Hanna is not a German name its a Hebrew name! But many people in Europe use it, its no problem.

For example if i give my child a name Takeru Susumi that does not make him japanese, but i like that name so i give it to him.
You cant give a kid a surname only a prename, do you understand? And a Latvian kid with the name Takeru --- dumber than dumb if you ask me. You watch too many mangas or japan pornos! Takeru Susumi.....people would roll on the ground laughing, wake up okay?

Man arī kaut kā šķiet, ka tas ir tik ļoti muļķīgi dot saviem bērniem kaut kādus ārzemnieku vārdus, no filmām utml. Džeina, Sindija utml.
