Fairly spread out. Is that a red dot on the Burmese border?

Yes, it seems to be. For some reason, the image is displaying squashed - but if you right-click and view image, it will display in it's original size.

Makes sense, but the vast majority of matches I have gotten were R1a1a1g* - I haven't seen any R1a1a1b matches yet.

How many markers do you have, can you paste them to me? You are by 100% positive to M198 but also very likely to be positive with many other SNP's.

Is this the "western variant" of R1a?

I have no idea really.

Could be but...this map shows all variants of R1a along with "Indo-Iranian" Z93, "Balto-Slavic" Z280,"Germanic" L664,"Germanic" Z284, "West-Slavic" M458 etc. Also remember about terrible oversampling of Brits.

Where were your Ashkenazi ancestors from? It is very plausible they had Slavic ancestry.

Germany and Poland mostly. But a Patrilineal Great Grandfather down the line was Lutheran according to paper trail.

A Great Grandfather of yours married a Jewess? That was back in the early 19th century, it probably was very rare back then.

I think it was actually a 12th Grandparent, but not sure. My family has always mixed to a degree; most of my cousins are at least.

That's the newest project map, actually. But it doesn't change much in your case, just adds an additional SNP you must be positive to:

So essentially, L1029 are 'Proto-Slavs' falling in between Scandinavians and Balts and are most likely Sorbs and/ or Polabian?

These were taken mostly from FamilyTreeDNA (http://www.familytreedna.com/v3/default_ffMTdo.aspx?utm_expid=75158416-0.YM7zSajuTrCmK4sqZhCZ6w.3&utm_referrer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Furl%3Fs a%3Dt%26rct%3Dj%26q%3D%26esrc%3Ds%26source%3Dweb%2 6cd%3D1%26ved%3D0CEcQFjAA%26url%3Dhttp%253A%252F%2 52Fwww.familytreedna.com%252F%26ei%3DgylnUtKgFO33i gL0ioDYCA%26usg%3DAFQjCNGs2H8hSUB80G_EDcbhz3LaouZm-w%26bvm%3Dbv.55123115%2Cd.cGE) but are R1a* specific.

Sorbs are mostly L260+ to which you are negative but many other West-Slavic descendants are L1029.

This is a distribution of confirmed L1029 basing on some results from FTDNA:
http://www.semargl.me/en/dna/ydna/haplotypes/maps/371/

You can join this project as well, they have a jewish cluster under L1029. I will say more - you must join this project and I recommend it, because I'm a member myself!

Hey Mark. I am L1029 as well. If you wish to send me a PM, perhaps we can see how far back we go to our common ancestor. If you have tested for at least 67 markers you will be listed on semargl.com by your FTDNA or YSearch i.d. number: http://www.semargl.me/en/dna/ydna/haplotypes/table/371/. If you test up to 111 markers, you will listed on these trees that people like Vladimir (semargl) and others do every so often: [/url] http://www.semargl.me/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/R1aTree20121009.png.

I just had Y-DNA done by FtDna, and my haplogroup on my paternal line showed nothing. I called and asked if there was a problem with my sample, and was told no that the sample was good, it is just that I am a rarity. According to my Y-DNA I have a R-M198...........I am curious about this and was wondering if someone might explain to me what this actually means? When I had asked FtDna, I was told by 2 agents that my DNA was the first that they had ever seen. I came across this group in hoping for some answers to this?
