Inspired by a post of Saparmurat's...

Ok pretty simple question: who is/was your favourite Beatle?

They were tremendous as The Beatles but really shone as individual artists imho, yes even Ringo (to some degree, Barbara Bach aside :D).

So who's your fave?

Mine? George Harrison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Harrison)--I always felt that he was overshadowed by John and Paul and never really given his proper due. His voice was strong yet soothing and he created some pretty memorable tunes.

I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan too. But the Beatles and Pink Floyd don't compare as the same genre of music in my mind. :D

I have to admit that I like Vinnie Moore's instrumental version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps a bit better than the original.

Ignore the weird slide show in this Youtube video.

Not music related but maybe interesting:
According to Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead), the Beatles back in their early days were quite tough guys from the worst working-class districts of Liverpool, and John Lennon occasionally jumped off the stage to beat up loudmouthed blokes in the audience, whereas the Rolling Stones, besides their ruder image, only were middle-class college kids who tried gaining credibility by artificially presenting themselves uncouth.

In high school musical education class we made an experimental doomy cover version of Maxwell's Silver Hammer (the assignment was to do a Beatles cover version, and all of their other songs were pretty much kindergarten songs with kindergarten lyrics) with weirdly tuned down guitars, slowed down to the max and with black metal vocals. We also used make-up somewhere between Kiss and King Diamond. The reception was kinda mixed, somewhere between shock and hysterical laughter. If I had had my way I would also have fired off some pyros in the aula. Anyway, we won the contest because we had given that song a certain spin while everyone else was closely copying the original versions.

Joan was quizzical, studied 'pataphysical
Science in the home
Late nights all alone with a test tube
Oh, oh-oh, oh
Maxwell Edison, majoring in medicine
Calls her on the phone
"Can I take you out to the pictures, Joan?"
But as she's getting ready to go
A knock comes on the door

Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead

Back in school again
Maxwell plays the fool again
Teacher gets annoyed
Wishing to avoid an unpleasant scene
She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away
So he waits behind
Writing fifty times "I must not be so, oh-oh, oh"
But when she turns her back on the boy
He creeps up from behind

Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon her head (do-do do-doo-doo)
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead

(Do-do do-doo-doo)

P.C. 31 said "We've caught a dirty one"
Maxwell stands alone
Painting testimonial pictures, oh, oh-oh, oh
Rose and Valerie, screaming from the gallery
Say he must go free ("Maxwell must go free")
The judge does not agree, and he tells them so, oh-oh, oh
But as the words are leaving his lips
A noise comes from behind

Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Came down upon his head (do-do do-doo-doo)
Bang, bang, Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead
Whoa, whoa, whoa

(Do-do do-doo-doo)

Silver hammer man

I find that hard to belive.
John Lennon wasn't 'working class', either, he grew up in a middle class area, & was probably more comfortably off than average at that point. This sounds like a 'rock myth'.
It's true about the Rolling Stones, though.

Lennon liked to consider himself a member - and leader - of the working class. However, he was raised in an upper-middle class home by his aunt. The other 3 Beatles, who all were raised in working class homes, resented Lennon for writing this song and later being referred to as a "Working Class Herohttp://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=2885

Lennon was on tour and would not see his new-born for three days. He then went on holiday to Spain with Epstein, which would lead to speculation of an affair between the two (Epstein was widely known to be gay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality)). Shortly afterwards, at McCartney's twenty-first birthday party on 18 June 1963, Lennon physically attacked Cavern Club MC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MC) Bob Wooler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Wooler) for saying "How was your honeymoon, John?". The MC, known for his wordplay and affectionate but cutting remarks,[113] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon#cite_note-112) was making a joke;[114] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon#cite_note-113)[115] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon#cite_note-harryp1169-114) however, ten months had passed since Lennon's marriage, and the honeymoon, deferred, was still two months in the future.[116] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon#cite_note-115) To Lennon, drunk, the matter was simple: "He called me a queer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer) so I battered his bloody ribs in".[115] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon#cite_note-harryp1169-114)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_lennon

Ringo was a mediocre drummer with a mediocre singing voice and talent. He could have been replaced by a drum machine and still no one would have missed him. He did make up for it by creating great havoc in true Rock N Roll style which has entered into folklore, and he also kept a generation of children captivated with his soothing voice for the Thomas the Tank Engine series.

George Harrison was a mediocre guitar player with no vocal talent to really write home to anyone about...in fact, to have got a pen to paper would have been only to write "STFU you long winded, Eastern religious fuck nob"
Fair enough he did compose some great songs, but even these paled into absolute insignificance in comparison to.....

.....Paul McCartney, who was one half of the duo which drove through the music scene creating ripples that are still felt in today's music. He was a good vocalist and a genius in music and lyrical composition. The only downfall with Paul for me is his blatant lack of respect for his working class values and his pig ignorant wealth. It pains me to actually give that snivelling one legged whore, Heather Mills, any value in life, but she did me proud in crippling his bank account. At least the money may get to circulate into the economy now.

No, by far the best Beatle (and I'm sorry this can't be argued against. Ever) was John Lennon. The other half of that famed duo, this man pioneered a generation into rebelling the system and stoking forward the individuality of perception and the freedom of basic human rights. The man used his wealth and fame to attempt to change the world around him for the better, and was openly ridiculed and belittled in every road he endeavoured. John Lennon had more hits lying around on his cutting room floor than Paul ever had in one life time. John Lennon actually stuck true to his roots and campaigned for the working class rights.

A genius, an inspiration, a true working class hero. Just a shame he saw fit to spread his seed with a slanty eyed money grabbing bag of shit, who even to this day cashes in on his name and makes John Lennon less and less of a hero and more and more into a brand; a commodity to be traded.

Anyway...

I once heard a theory that the Beatles are dying in order of importance and talent. Lennon was killed in 1980, Harrison died in 2001, McCartney is said to be the one who kicks the bucket next, and then maybe 4,000 years from now Ringo will pass away. :D

Although I don't have a preferred Beatle, the band was still decent and something I can listen to.

My favorite British band is definitely The Who. :)

Beatles had some great tunes.
Even if they actually sound a bit stalinistic and socialist.

When I was a kid, Paul McCartney stood out for me. However, I voted for George, because he was far less egotistical than both John and Paul put together. There was nothing wrong with his lead guitar skills and he played a mean sitar (only to be beaten by Ravi Shankar).

Musically, they hit their strides from Rubber Soul onwards. One of my favourite tracks is Because, from Abbey Road.

I was actually tempted to vote "other" and write in George Martin because his amazing orchestrations and production techniques contributed as much (or more) to the Beatle's lexicon as any one of the "fab four", but in the end I had to vote for McCartney.

Personality wise, I admit he leaves me a bit out in the cold (with all the PETA preaching & stuff), but I don't have to hang out with him-I just like to listen to his music. If I was going to vote on personality I'd probably vote for Harrison-at least he knew when to stay out of the public spotlight and just shut up for awhile. That's something Paul and especially John could have taken a lesson from him on.

In the end, I just like Paul's songs better. Nothing wrong with the others, I just tend to like a few of Paul's above the rest. His output was also more consistent. I'd have to disagree with BeornWulfer's notion that Lennon left better songs on the floor as well (sorry, man). Lennon certainly flashed brilliantly and has written some incredibly beautiful music, but his post Beatles albums seem to have more filler between the genius to my ear.

He was also the only one of them that can rightly be regarded as a genius on his instrument. Harrison was quite good, but not exceptional; Lennon was spirited but only adequate; and Ringo was pretty pitiful (but at least he knew his limits). The consensus within the bass community is that McCartney really revolutionized the instrument and I agree.

I voted for the Walrus.
