In an interview for Tanjug, Djuric said that the situation in the territory populated mainly by Serbs is peaceful and stable, save for isolated incidents which he said cannot lead to disturbance of security to a greater extent.

He said that the northern Mitrovica region deploys around 250 police officers and some 50 civil servants, which is not enough for performance of all tasks but until a solution is found, police officers will do their best to meet the needs of the service and citizens’ requests.

He reiterated that the police region of northern Mitrovica is still being set up and it will cover the units within the regional directorate for the fight against all forms of organised crime, including smuggling and corruption.

Djuric said that cooperation with EULEX is on a rather high level.

Speaking about the main tasks of the police in northern Kosovo, Djuric underscored that the priority lies in establishment of the northern Mitrovica region which entails the formation of regional units, task organisation, training of police officers and their superiors and implementation of operative plans and strategies.

Djuric was appointed regional director of Kosovo police in charge of northern Kosovo by the Kosovo government in late June on grounds of the Brussels agreement between Belgrade and Pristina.

The Brussels agreement specifies that regional police commander would be appointed for four Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo, comprising northern Kosovska Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic.

The commander of the region should be a Kosovo Serb nominated by the Serbian Interior Ministry, as a candidate from the list submitted by heads of four municipalities on behalf of the community of Serb municipalities.

As the community has not been formed yet, the commander was nominated during the talks in Brussels, after which Djuric was appointed for his current office.
