FINALLY – a clothing store uses a diverse range of models and the results are amazing

Finally – someone gets it right!

If you know your way around the fashion industry, you’re familiar with the term “Lookbook.” Companies use lookbooks to showcase specific designs or a store’s upcoming seasonal lines. Usually, they’re filled with slim, caucasian models that have been used on runways and the majority of the fashion industry for ages. But Debenhaums, a popular U.K.-based store, wants to be known for its enthusiasm for diversity as it is for its fashion-forward clothes.

In Debenhaums recently released High Summer Lookbook, the company made the choice to use models that accurately reflected the diverse population of the world we live in. You’ll see models in a variety of age groups, ethnicities and body types. According to the company, it’s the first store of its kind to do so.

This isn’t the only time Debenhaums has led the way in creating a more body-positive attitude in fashion, celebrating a range of body types and ages in its advertising, marketing and design. The company has implemented size 16 mannequins in its in-story displays and voluntarily banned airbrushing in its swimsuit ads.

The pictures are stunning. Why don’t more companies do this? Perhaps designers are afraid that presenting their clothing as too inclusive and not aspirational enough would dampen their desirability. I believe Debenhaums proves that theory wrong. Seeing imagery that reflects the world we live in and bodies that are similar to ours – the consumer – we’re able to see the real potential of the product and we feel included. By the way, did you know that people are actually more likely to buy clothes when they’re modeled on mannequins that resemble their body type?

If Debenhams’ lookbook teaches us anything, it may be that simply because we’ve always done things in a particular way doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the only way, or even the right way.

I think it's a great idea. I was tired of anorexic corpses.

What the fuck. I get using fat people in these magazines, because the number of whales around is growing at alarming rates, so this is a huge market for the fashion industry (pun intended). I also get using black and old people - why not, they are customers too.

But amputees? That is sick. They are not marketing their clothes to the amputees (the market size is negligible relative to this level of representation), they are using them for a)shock value b)pseudo-do-gooder publicity.

There are loads of plus size models and specialized fashion companies who are in that branch of industry. This has nothing to do with it, especially bold prints on plus size woman and pls, what's anorexic?

Hidden lol! What you guys don't understand is that models carry someones artwork (design) not the other way around. Designers don't want to restrict them self based on models body types, unless, as I already said, they're not designing clothes for some specialized branches of fashion industry.

I feel like most clothes and fashions are made for straight bodies. I need to see clothes on pear-shaped models, to understand if they fit me. Im not talking about high fashion, but those average models who model clothing for us average people. Most people are not out there looking to wear artwork.

^^ Exactly it's like fashion designers think we all have been prisoners at Auschwitz lol.

No offense but when they put overweight models and they make her seem all happy, and felling good, well they shouldn't. I don't really care for the fact that they look fat, simply for the fact that obesity comes with many health issues. Now I'm not saying bully them to depression for not being skinnier, just that when you put models like that it makes it seem as if though it's ok to be overweight, and than they don't put in any effort to loose weight.

There is a big difference between super-skinny anorexic-looking and overweight.

Most females fall into the category in between. They're not fat. They're not super-skinny. Normal, ordinary, everyday women.

I am also a pear shape and the pants I want look great on models. But when I try them on they fit terribly. I am 162cm tall and weigh 60kg. I am hardly overweight but I just don't have the body shape which is shown the fashion magazines. It's extremely demotivating to see something you like, and when you try it on you look like an overstuffed sausage, even if you're not fat.

I would like to see models with my own body-shape. It will give me a better idea of what to go for, instead of feeling horrible about myself when I try and squeeze myself into something which looks good on someone with a typical model body.
