Glacier Valley, Iceland

Photograph by Adam Henning, National Geographic Your Shot

National Geographic Your Shot contributor Adam Henning's sweeping photo of an Icelandic valley was one of 20 chosen for a Travelogue story compiled by one of our photo editors.

"On a cloudy day we traveled to the west end of the Vatnajökull Glacier in Iceland," Henning says. When the clouds opened, the travelers saw "this amazing valley with Eyjafjallajökull and Katla standing over a river floor layered with black ash, sand, and lava from years of eruptions and flooding."

McWay Falls, Big Sur

Your Shot contributor Mukul Soman's nighttime photo of McWay Falls at Big Sur, California, was also featured in the Travelogue assignment. "This famous location at Big Sur is often photographed, but becomes more intriguing under the night sky," senior photo editor Sarah Polger explains. "The long exposure allows trees blowing in the wind to soften to a dreamy, brushed aesthetic, as the deep colors of the sky and ocean saturate the frame."

A diver explores Mexico's Aktun Ha cenote—also known as Car Wash.

National Geographic Your Shot contributor Tian Tian says the dive was his first at the site, a popular destination for cave and cavern diving. In summer, he says, "there is an algae layer at the surface, which traps much of the sunlight and creates a mysterious green atmosphere."

Aurora in Lofoten Islands, Norway

Photograph by Kevin Gorton, National Geographic Your Shot

The northern lights glow over the Lofoten Islands in this picture taken by Your Shot community member Kevin Gorton. "I shot this image of the aurora on my first trip to Arctic Norway in March 2013; a truly stunning place and the chance to see the aurora makes it irresistible," he says. "Witnessing the aurora is so special and surreal."

The Lofoten Islands, in Norway's far north, are a peninsula-like chain of wild, craggy shards jutting into the Norwegian Sea above the Arctic Circle.

National Geographic Your Shot contributor Thornton Cohen shared this striking picture. "I had a last day of walking around what had become my favorite Bangladeshi market in the tea plantation town of Srimangal," he writes. "While I had raked through its hidden corners for more images, I knew it had not given up all. Then I found the drummaker and his family."
