Shooting of Prominent IMF Economist Baffles Police

BETHESDA, Md. - Police are still looking for clues after a prominent economist was shot in the garage of his upscale home.

Ashoka Mody has been identified in an email to his fellow employees at the International Monetary Fund as the man shot Thursday night around 7:30 in his Bethesda garage in the 6800 block of Millwood Road

Mody is currently the assistant director in the European department and an expert in economic development and international finance.

He is also known in his Kenwood Park community as a good neighbor, and those who live near him are stunned that he would be the target of a gunman.

Police say the 54-year-old remains in critical condition after he was shot in his garage Thursday night, before he even had a chance to get out of his vehicle.

It is unclear if anything was taken during the attack and police say they don't know whether it was a random or targeted crime.

After the shooting, the usually quiet Bethesda neighborhood was filled with police and detectives scouring the lawn as they continue their hunt for a gunman.

"This is worrisome," said a neighbor.

"It had to be random," said Julia Sullivan. "They are the nicest family. I don't know why anyone would want to hurt them so it's terrifying."

Michael Sullivan added, "If it was random, it could have been me."

Detectives are still working to determine a motive for the shooting and police have only a vague description of the masked gunman, who fled on foot.

"We know he was last seen fleeing from this community toward Goldsboro Road," Baur said. "We expect he escaped from the area."

Police say there is no evidence to suggest robbery was the motive behind the shooting, but the investigation remains in its infancy.

In my opinion; this is either a hit, from either side of the fense, or he could be a whistle blower. Time will tell.

Police are looking for a man who was wearing a mask and was inside Mody’s garage when the IMF official arrived in his car, Fox News reported today. Mody, 53, was shot while still inside the car, Fox News said.

The IMF’s Beckman said she didn’t know whether Mody’s current position involves work on other European countries. The IMF Web site shows that in 2006 and 2007, he wrote op-ed pieces or letters to the editor on countries such as Hungary, Lithuania and Estonia. Before joining the IMF, Beckman said, Mody worked at the World Bank.

“We are all hoping that Ashoka makes a swift recovery, and we extend our heartfelt sympathy and best wishes to his wife and sons at this difficult time,” Beckman said in an IMF statement. “Ashoka is well known at the Fund as one of its most esteemed economists, an experienced and dedicated colleague, and a valued member of the fund family.”

Typically, professional hitmen know where the vitals are. They know what to do to get the job done and 9 times out of ten, if contracted, they confirm that the job was carried out. It's odd that he was shot in his car, didn't appear to be armed, yet the assailant took off. Why would a professional hit man be in such haste to take off? It doesn't look like a professional job to me, and it doesn't look as if any attempts were made to rob him of anyting. If anything, it looks like an anti-NWO hit by a pissed off amateur, or he's having some pretty serious family troubles. We'll see how the authorities rule this one.
