A wanted Palestinian terrorist was killed during a shootout with Israeli soldiers in the northern Samaria city of Jenin on Tuesday.

According to the Israeli army, the soldiers were sent to arrest the suspect when they were assaulted with grenades and other incendiary devices. The soldiers opened fire on their attackers, and wounded the wanted man as he attempted to escape the scene.

The terrorist later died of his injuries while being treated at an Israeli hospital.

In the Palestinian media, the incident was reported as a major Israeli incursion during which 20 armored vehicles entered Jenin, mass amounts of tear gas were fired and a number of local houses were forcibly entered.

Jenin is an autonomous Palestinian city in the north of the so-called "West Bank." On the outskirts of town is situated a large "refugee camp," which was established in 1953 for Palestinians who lost their homes as a result of the 1948 Arab war against the fledgling Jewish state. The camp is now inhabited by the descendants of those refugees, most of whom are unemployed youth. Jenin is considered a stronghold of the radical Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, the "armed wing" of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' ruling Fatah faction.
