by structure, i mean, people who grew up in a religion. got used to the structure of the religion-beliefs, practices, ceremonies. then they stop practicing their religion, now they feel unfocused and scatterbrained about how to structure their life together.

Humans are social animals. They need to find connection and belonging to some sort of society or social group. If they loose connection with one society and can't find connection with other, they might loose purpose and direction in their lives. Without that, there can be no consistent structure if purpose is missing.

Even most scatterbrained among us need some structure. If people loose any connection with others, they loose social purpose as well. Any new personal purpose will most likely be harmful to others in it's concept. If all dignity is lost, people might enact more generally unacceptable behaviors without fear of loosing more. "Let the chaos reign" might become new mindset.
