'Wow! There's poop everywhere!’ says an 8-year-old boy as he and his family dine at the Modern Toilet, a popular Taiwanese restaurant chain that's expanding into Xiamen. The boy was curiously looking at the poop-shaped lights and the curry on toilet-shaped plates.

Modern Toilet is a unique bathroom-themed restaurant chain, based in Taiwan, with several branches throughout Asia. In the restaurant, every customer sits on an actual unworking toilet and dines at a glass table with a sink underneath. The servers bring your meal atop a mini toilet bowl (quite convenient, as it brings the food closer to your mouth), you sip drinks from your own plastic urinal (a souvenir), and soft-swirl ice cream arrives for dessert atop a dish shaped like a squat toilet.

Owner Wang Zi-Wei, an ex-banker, stated that his inspiration for the bathroom themed restaurant came from a robot character from the Japanese cartoon Dr. Slump who loved to "play with poop and swirl it on a stick." From this cartoon inspiration, he started a successful ice cream shop selling swirled chocolate ice cream on top of paper squat toilets.
The arrival of the ‘Modern Toilet Restaurant’ launches the next generation of toilet-themed restaurants. With new ideas and new products, the goal of the restaurant is to become ‘The No. 1 Brand in Themed Chain Restaurants’. And in the future, a greater range of washroom facilities will greet new customers and old friends alike.
