Classify Éamon de Valera (Former Prime Minister of Ireland)

Éamon de Valera is a towering figure in Irish history. His ancestry is a bit of a mystery. He was born in New York to an Irish mother and a Cuban father of Spanish descent but there is no marriage certificate for his parents and no baptismal or death certificate was ever located for his father. His father apparently died when he was 2 and he was sent to Ireland where he was raised by his Grandmother in Limerick. He was very much a part of the Easter Rising in 1916 and was saved from execution by the British because of his American birth. Anyway here is a link to read more about him if people wish.

I'm just wondering if he looks like he has ancestry from Cuba or Spain. He was a tall man of 6ft 2in (187.96 cms).

He was played by Alan Rickman in the movie Michael Collins.

I'm presuming the Baskid would be related to Basque? This would be from his Spanish side?

Looks like a jew to me to be honest, but some north irish and black irish do, to me.

I don't think he looks basque in the least. He also doesn't have a sloping forehead at all, that eyes and forehead are more english than anything.

Face is too small and forehead too high for it to come out of either basque, spanish, or irish, and mouth is way off for all of them (maybe from spanish I guess). So I'd say without any foreknowledge he is half irish and half anglo-jewish, or some similar mix. Maybe she was part anglo-jewish, or the cuban was "atypical", that's the only way I can see this mix coming out.

Thanks Melonhead. His mother was Irish and his father was supposed to be Cuban of Spanish ancestry but no proof of him has been found. That's why I was wondering if anyone could see any Spanish in him. There is a great photo of his granddaughter Síle de Valera but it is copyrighted. She was involved in politics as well. Looks like german housewife.

His nose actually looks like my paternal grandfather who is english (I think from east anglia but maybe northumbria). But he has huge blues eyes in deep-set sockets and sloping forehead and more typically english mouth, and bigger face. De Vala has some shallow, wide apart eyes which is not really very british isles OR iberian feature so it's still a mystery.

Don't know for sure what my gf's clade is might be something not typical for english, maybe jewish or roman or something. Certainly not many english (or anyone else) really look like him.

Thanks for your comments Melonhead. De Valera doesn't look like an Irish/Spanish mix to me either. It would be great if some Spanish posters could comment. De Valera's parentage has never been solved but he was undoubtedly a legend of Irish politics and one of the biggest figures in Irish history. He was known in Ireland as Dev.

The mouth and jutting out chin coould be portuguese but won't account for the huge nose really.

Big jug ears and the profile of the nose looks just like my grandfather, though. If anyone has some good idea where that traces to, let me know.

Some nordic people also look a bit similar so it could be early viking admixture, in my grandfather's case. Seems odd to find that look in a cuban or a girl in limerick, but anything's possible.
