He's the leader of a demographic of White Americans who had Cherokee ancestors several generations ago; is a better way of stating it.

How someone can disregard the 99% of his ancestry that is likely Anglo-Saxon Protestant and use the 1% that isn't as his meal ticket to become head of a Federally-recognised Indian tribe and collect a 6-figure salary and associated perks, is beyond me.

I would bet he lived the majority of his life in complete ignorance of his Cherokee ancestry. This silly romanticized fascination with frontier Native Americans and the desire to claim native ancestry some Americans have is bizarre.

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma does not have Blood Quantum requirements, the sole pre-requisite to enroll with them is direct lineage from one person listed on the Dawes Rolls. To receive federal benefits in most cases as a Native American one must be no less than 1/4 Native American in ancestry.

As leader of the Cherokee Nation he is not claiming Native American descent, he is Native American and had to have done much work for the tribe to get elected.

Blood dilution has no bearing for them, it is the cultural and communal aspects that prove indigeneity.

Pequots are similar as are many other New England tribes since Native Americans (who are federally recognized) were originally treated as Nations not merely as people with indigenous blood.
