Pretty girl... both the person I knew and the woman in the OP, except she doesn't do herself any favors with the dyke-like hair cut. Some women can pull it off but it looks terrible on most.

She wasn't Portuguese, though. She was from South America (not Brazil). I take it that it's mostly found on the islands and not so much on mainland Portugal. The Bettencourt clan seem to like to wander the globe. With my surname we tend to stay in place, for the most part.

Probably Canary Islander descent then.

Canary Island descended ones are different from the Portuguese descended ones. Canary Islanders were baptized with the surname, Portuguese with the surname descend from the actual family that settled in the Azores.

Yeah, I remember now someone mentioning that before, perhaps in this forum. I also vaguely remember now a French captain with that surname that I think was working for the Castillians checking out those islands. I suppose that was done in his honor.
