Black women in the U.S. appear to be shrinking (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-black-women-shrinkingdec25,0,2562107.story)

They're shorter on average than a generation ago, federal study says

Call her The Incredible Shrinking African-American Woman.

In an age when the adult populations of most industrialized nations have grown significantly taller, the average height of black women in the U.S. has been receding, beginning with those born in the late 1960s.

The difference in stature between white women and black women has now stretched to three-quarters of an inch and appears to be increasing, according to newly released data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/health/diseases/centers-for-disease-control-prevention-ORGOV000011.topic).

The main culprit appears to be diet.

The average height of a black woman born in the 1980s is just under 5 feet 4 inches; her mother, born in the 1960s, is more than half an inch taller. Even her grandmother, born in the 1940s, is a bit taller. The average white woman born in the 1980s is about half an inch taller than her mother.

The gap is "truly phenomenal," according to John Komlos, an economist and historian who has made a specialty of studying human heights. "Such a steep decline is practically unprecedented in modern U.S. history."

You have to go back to the antebellum South to find a similar shrinkage. The generation of white men born in the 1840s who experienced the ravages of the Civil War lost nearly an inch to their Northern counterparts, Komlos said.

A Chicago native who is a professor at the University of Munich, Komlos made a name for himself several years ago when his research revealed that the average height of adult Americans, once the tallest folk to roam the planet, had stopped rising after World War II (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/unrest-conflicts-war/wars-interventions/world-war-ii-EVHST00000110.topic) and has since been surpassed by that of several European nations. The Dutch now lay claim to the title of tallest.

Komlos' latest findings, based on the NHANES data, suggest that after nearly 25 years of stagnation, the average height of adult Americans born from 1975 to 1986 has edged up again—with the exception of black women, whose height is moving in the opposite direction.

The reason this matters, according to Komlos, is because "height is a very good overall indicator of how well the human organism thrives in its socioeconomic environment."

His argument is bolstered by another discovery: While the heights of low- and middle-income black women are plummeting, upper-income black women are growing taller and rapidly closing the gap with their white counterparts.

An individual's height is fixed mainly by genes, but the average height of different categories of people is determined to a large extent by external factors.

Komlos, who has been studying heights since the early 1980s, says the downward trend among black women was "quite unexpected."

"There have been declines before" in the U.S. population, he said. "But never this quickly."

Nancy Adler, director of the MacArthur Foundation's Research Network on Socioeconomic Status and Health, said Komlos' latest findings were "puzzling" but consistent with what is already known about the impact of income disparity, access to health care and educational levels on a person's overall well-being.

Also baffling, Adler said, is the disparity between black men and black women, "since they are subject to the same pre-birth conditions" and then grow up in the same environment.

"The only reasonable explanation we can come up with is diet and the obesity epidemic among [middle- and low-income] black women," said Komlos.

Over the last three decades, the prevalence of obesity among white Americans has tripled, while among blacks it has increased fivefold.

Black females were hardest hit: Almost 80 percent of black females are overweight or obese, compared with 62 percent of the total female population, according to the CDC.

The problem develops early. Twenty-one percent of black females ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese, compared with 12 percent of white girls.

Another oddity, according to Komlos, is that black children, both male and female, grow faster and taller than their white counterparts in early childhood, but whites catch up and pass them during the teen years.

Pediatric growth experts offer one possible explanation. High caloric intake from an unhealthy diet fuels an early growth spurt among black children, plus it speeds the onset of puberty, especially for black girls, who now begin menstruating 81/2 months ahead of white girls. This early onset of puberty reduces the duration of the critical pre-adolescent growth spurt, resulting in a lower adult height.

People who are short or overweight tend to be more susceptible to health problems than their taller, thinner counterparts. They also tend to produce offspring susceptible to the same problems, thus making the cycle hard to break.

Komlos blames the long stagnation of American growth rates that began in the 1950s and the current obesity epidemic on the one-two punch of television and fast food.

"In my opinion, the pressure to consume is so high on the American population that is very difficult for anyone to withstand the urge," he said. "Education and income help, but the pressure is pretty overwhelming."

Height is an issue with me :D I`m only five foot tall, but my children are all a great deal taller than me, with my eldest daughter being six foot! :)
My parents were also small, and my dad used to tell me our height was due to the Pictish blood in us. :D
Hey, I was a child, I believed him! But he also used to say if we ate our porridge up it`d put hairs on our chests. I spent my preteen years dreading that.....

I feel deficient now, knowing that the average American black woman is taller than me....:(

Could it be that so many black woman are overweight? I would have to say that by just walking down the street in Washington (my hometown), I would notice that 2 of every 3 black woman are obese. Not fat, but really obese. I guarantee that is a health issue.

That is not an oddity, their gestation period is shorter too. Blacks have evolved to live in a different more physical environment that caucasions and so have a larger emphasis on physical growth. Unfortunatly I can't remember the study but I read that one had been done on the hight discrepancies in the old industrial towns in the british midlands.
They found that people there were shorter than the average (among other problems) and they put this down to young mothers having low birth weight babies, and those children going on to do the same. Apparantly a low birth weight stunts later physical (and mental) growth.

Just 2 out of 3?
Almost 100% of ''Third World" women I've seen had been overweight or obese

http://seen.mainetoday.com/gallery_photos/2008/08/20/148893/1548_queen_latifah_358.jpg

How hypocritical of society... Black/Mexican women can be chronically obese and remain ''sexy'' in Hollywood. While the second an European women assumes a normal weight or becomes overweight, she is humiliated and ostracized.

I think there is a ''fat gene'' that afflicts most of the Third World. But Hollywood as an institution is largely responsible for our failure of upbringing the Negroid and Mexican. The Black had more or less been tamed in the past, but in recent generations, images of ''Gangsters", crack dealers and criminals, has turned a Black Ghetto into a no-go zone for Americans.
This is in real stark contrast to the stories of the 1940's and 1950's. White Men and Women went to the ''Black Ghettos", because it was perfectly safe and it was a good way to get handicrafts and cheap food

Fast food'll do that to ya.
------------------------

BACKGROUND: Environmental factors may contribute to the increasing prevalence of obesity, especially in black and low-income populations. In this paper, the geographic distribution of fast food restaurants is examined relative to neighborhood sociodemographics. METHODS: Using geographic information system software, all fast-food restaurants within the city limits of New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2001 were mapped. Buffers around census tracts were generated to simulate 1-mile and 0.5-mile "shopping areas" around and including each tract, and fast food restaurant density (number of restaurants per square mile) was calculated for each area. Using multiple regression, the geographic association between fast food restaurant density and black and low-income neighborhoods was assessed, while controlling for environmental confounders that might also influence the placement of restaurants (commercial activity, presence of major highways, and median home values). RESULTS: In 156 census tracts, a total of 155 fast food restaurants were identified. In the regression analysis that included the environmental confounders, fast-food restaurant density in shopping areas with 1-mile buffers was independently correlated with median household income and percent of black residents in the census tract. Similar results were found for shopping areas with 0.5-mile buffers. Predominantly black neighborhoods have 2.4 fast-food restaurants per square mile compared to 1.5 restaurants in predominantly white neighborhoods. CONCLUSIONS: The link between fast food restaurants and black and low-income neighborhoods may contribute to the understanding of environmental causes of the obesity epidemic in these populations.

Does them no favours either...it used to be believed by obese folks (particularly blacks) that being overweight meant, in times of famine, that they would have more reserves to draw upon, but latest research shows that thin people who habitually eat less than average are the ones that survive longest in famine barring other factors like disease, accident etc.
Well, I may be short but at least I`m not overweight. :D
Though, once you hit middle age, it gets harder to keep your weight stable! :(
If I was as obese as many black women I`d look like a human barrel.

Weird thing about the US, our poor people seem to be the most obese. They are fattest segment of the population.

Blaming fast food for obesity is like blaming a liquor store for alcoholism. Don't eat like a pig and you won't get fat. Don't drink alcohol and you won't be an alcoholic......

I agree, but it's often more economical for poor people to buy cheap fast food rather than spend it on a good home cooked meal. Not to mention the preservatives and other bad stuff, as evidenced by this video.

Tend to agree with Thorum...each time I`ve put on a few pounds, it`s been plain and simply because I stuffed my face and did no work or exercise. Self discipline is often hard, but the results pay dividends. :D
Incidentally, the sugar in alcohol is converted into fat in the body. Dammit....:D

I think people buy McDonald's because it's quick and tasty. Same reason I was forced to go to Subway in Scotland because I didn't have a kitchen or the time to cook.
Don't bring up the price argument because it doesn't work that well. It's all about instant gratification that's synamous with American culture.

The price argument is bullshit. I can buy a dozen eggs and some bread and that will do me for three breakfast. And I can cook some rice in the steamer and eat some lamb for a couple of days.

That's why it's called fast food.

Forced?
I usually just head to a grocery store and get some fruit or something to hold me over.

I can get two double cheeseburgers a drink and a medium fry for $5. That's also typically more appealing to the human palate than some eggs and rice.

Recipe for success? Salt and fat, admits McDonald's chief

Published Date: 02 January 2009
By LYNDSAY MOSS AND ERIKKA ASKELAND
THE woman given the job of promoting McDonald's has revealed the secret of the fast-food chain's success – salt and fat.

In what some might see as a slightly-too-honest appraisal of her company's products, Jill McDonald, chief marketing officer for McDonald's UK, admitted that if the firm removed unhealthy ingredients, consumers would vote with their feet and eat elsewhere.

A move towards healthier choices – including salads and more chicken – has won McDonald's some plaudits among those trying to promote better diet.

But in an interview with The Scotsman, Ms McDonald said the core market remained burgers because that was what the public wanted – along with the salt and fat which came with them.

"Although we are very clear we are a burger business – that is why primarily people come to us – our customers are more aware of the need to follow a balanced diet and we needed to move in line with what customers wanted," she said.

"But fat and salt makes food taste good. There is no point taking all the fat and salt out of your food because people won't like it and they will eat with someone else. We have to make small steps to help people improve their diet."

Ms McDonald's open admission about the staples of the McDonald's menu follows a difficult few years for the chain.

Its reputation was severely hit by the film-maker Martin Spurlock, who documented his physical decline following a strict fast-food diet in the 2004 movie Super Size Me.

Last year, Ms McDonald was named marketer of the year, due to her success in helping to bring transparency and trust to what had become an unpopular brand.

She joined McDonald's in 2006 after working for British Airways and admitted that when she visited one of its restaurants before being offered the job, she "hadn't had a great experience".

Nevertheless, she maintains she was never an enemy of the brand either, and said: "My children eat at McDonald's twice a week."

As well as changes to the menu, the company has relaunched its website to allow consumers to ask questions and find out exactly how much salt, fat and calories are contained in McDonald's products.

But many people would like to see fast-food chains cut unhealthy ingredients in their foods much further.

Fife-based nutritionist Carina Norris said the problem was that people had got used to these fatty and salty foods and liked them. She said: "Ideally, we would like people to start weaning themselves off these tastes and on to healthier options.

"But failing that, it would be great if restaurants and manufacturers did their own bit by taking salt and fat out of foods."

Ms Norris added: "The problem from a business point of view is that no-one wants to be the first one to take fat and salt out of their foods and make them less tasty. People would go somewhere else.

"But if someone like McDonald's would be willing to take this step and people adapted to healthier options, that would be very welcome."

Tam Fry, chairman of the Child Growth Foundation, said: "It is true that humans do require some level of fat, salt and sugar in their diet but not to the extent that companies such as McDonald's have been putting them in their foods.

"McDonald's have tried to improve their menu, but you have to remember that their core business is still cheap, processed food."

Vital for the human diet

SALT and fat are a vital part of the human diet. The body needs a certain amount of salt to function properly, while fat is also necessary for energy.

Nutritionist Carina Norris said evolution had driven people to develop a taste for salt and fat and seek these out.

This was particularly important during times when food was in short supply.

"The problem is that these tastes are much more accessible to us now and so the evolutionary process is working against us.

"We are also a lot less physically active than we once were," Ms Norris said.
