Houston — though better known for its energy roots — has a deep history with cosmetic surgery. The first silicone breast implant was inserted five decades ago into a woman at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston.

The invasive world of plastic surgery is a billion-dollar industry and one that is not heavily regulated in several states, including Texas.

Americans spent $6.7 billion last year on almost 1.7 million cosmetic surgeries, reports the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The largest percentage of those were performed on 35- to 50-year-olds.

The number of cosmetic surgeries performed each year in the U.S. has been modestly increasing, but it still lags prerecession peaks from 2007.

Despite the increase, only 15 percent of cosmetic surgeries done last year were at a hospital, reports the ASAPS.

"Practicing plastic surgery in Houston for over 20 years, I am still amazed that there is no federal or state mandate prohibiting surgeons throughout Texas from doing surgical procedures in their offices," said Dr. Michael Eisemann, a plastic surgeon and founder of Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center in Houston.

No. 10: Otoplasty, or protruding ear surgery, is among a top surgery for men and is most common in those age 18 and younger.

No. 9: Autologous fat grafting. This procedure removes fat from a patient and implants it elsewhere on the body, such as in the lips. Fat grafting is also commonly used in place of traditional butt implants.

No. 8: Breast reduction for women, most common among women age 35 to 50

No. 7: Facelift. This procedure is most common for people age 65 and older and has a two-week recovery time.

No. 6: Breast lift. There has been a 540 percent increase since 1997 in this procedure.

No. 5: Nose job, or rhinoplasty, ranks sixth among women and second among men.

No. 4: Eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, makes the patient look more rested and alert and is most popular among 51- to 64-year-olds.

No. 3: Tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is popular among the 35 to 50 age group. The number performed has increased by 360 percent in the past 16 years.

No. 2: Liposuction, most common for people age 35 to 50, is known officially as lipoplasty.

No. 1: Breast augmentation, most popular among 19- to 34-year-old females, is the most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S. Silicone implants are preferred over saline.
