Possibly a genetic imprint of a moor or Sephardic jew on the Spaniards who then took it with them over the Atlantic with their conquering of the natives.

Possibly but not a certainty. Many people still make the erroneous assumption that haplogroup J2=Jewish ancestry. I am not saying that you are making this assumption but many people still seem to. The vast vast majority of J2 men out there are not descended from Jews along their paternal lines. True that a lot of Jews are J2 though and in this case it may be more likely since it seems that many Latinos in the Southwest of the US and Mexico have Crypto-Jew ancestry.

J2 is not necessarily Jewish, J2 is most common in Western Asia, it could be Anatolian.

Actually it is most common in the Caucasus. The Ingush and Chechens have the highest frequencies of any groups in the world.

Yes

Okay well it seems likely that you are probably J2a then as I am J2a but I am listed as being just J2 at 23andme as well. I don't think they test for the M410 SNP that defines J2a at 23andme unfortunately.

Yes, but the question is which groups migrated to Mexico. As far as I know the best odds would be Sephardis?

What makes you think he has Sephardi ancestry based on that test? His Ashkenazi score is not really much higher than what most Europeans would get on this test....He should run Oracle.

I also assumed Sephardic ancestry somewhere down the line when I first saw Mexican and J2 in Martin's profile. But it could also be from the Moor's in Spanish history or simply a Southern European subclade of J2.

I recommend doing Adriano Squecco since it's free, I have yet to do it myself with my father's ydna but I will soon. Adriano is the Doug McDonald of ydna as far as I know. Download just the ydna of your raw data and send it to him like you would McDonald. It's possible he can tell you your subclade. If not, you can try FTDNA in the future since they specialize in deep subclades and clusters of haplogroups.

Sephardis or Crypto-Jews are certainly a possibility. But so is a native Spanish origin.

Most reported ''J2''s by 23andMe turns out J2a and downstreams in further SNPs testings by FTDNA or Geno 2..

I agree, but I guess it couldn't last forever and we're lucky to have even been offered it as a free service. Quite frankly I'm surprised Doug McDonald still provides his analysis at no cost, albeit selectively.
