In a shocking turn the highest religious authority of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Grand Mufti Abdulaziz Al al-Sheikh, says the Saudis should avoid further involvement in Syria and advises young Saudis not to join militants seeking to overthrow the Syrian government of Bashar al Assad.

Abdulaziz Al al-Sheikh, appointed by the Saudi king, directly contradicted previous calls for jihad by fellow wahhabi clerics and also went against the official line of the Saudi royal family.

Pan-Arab newspaper al Hayat cited a lecture given by the grand mufti himself on Monday where he declared that fatwas given out by certain clerics calling the “Jihad” in Syria obligatory are wrong.

“This is all wrong, it’s not obligatory,” he said.

He went on to discourage young Saudi men wishing to join the militants in Syria.

“These are feuding factions and one should not go there. I do not advise one to go there … Going to a land that you do not know and without experience, you will be a burden to them, what they want from you is your prayer.”

As many wahhabi clerics give out fatwas ordering both men and women to travel to Syria and perform “jihad”, the Grand mufti warned fellow preachers from encouraging just that.

“Muslim should be fearful of God and not deceive young Muslims and exploit their weakness and lack of insight and push them to an abyss,” the mufti was quoted by al-Hayat.

“I advise them to advise as they would advise their sons.”

Throughout the Syrian conflict, the Saudi kingdom has strongly backed militants fighting the Syrian government lending them great political, financial and material support. It’s also estimated that thousands of Saudis have travelled to Syria to join various militant groups.
