Trotting around trails and along the lakes on horseback is a different way of explore the Azores. More than a sport, horse riding is a tradition in these islands. There are records from the 16th century that mention horses in property inventories, some dating back to the first settlers.
If you are still learning, there are some programs available to prepare you for riding adventures on the Azorean trails. Quinta da Terça, on São Miguel Island, offers special programs for both learners and experienced riders.
You may find pure and cross-bred Lusitano horses in their stable and take lessons in the covered riding arena, that also as a large open fireplace and a bar, perfect for relaxing after lessons.
When you feel prepared, Quinta da Terça’s staff has already design different programs so you can discover, explore and enjoy S. Miguel from horseback. Known as the “green island”, the tour rides takes you to many interesting, exciting and exotic places waiting to be explored.
Riders may choose between “The little Ride”, that explores the small roads of Livramento village, or the “Troplical Forest Tour”, a 2-3 ride through the Azorean pastures with milk cows and the exotic forest.
Half and full day programs are also available and explore the diversity of the island: North Coast, Remédios, Ribeirinha, Pico do Refúgio, Cabuco, Fenaiz da Luz, Sete Cidades, Ribeira Grande, and so much more.
