  1. Nefas colligo erado damnatio

Target audience: Those who have a spiritual bent, as the thought applies to any group holding to absolute moral values as a guide to life.

We hear from time to time (When we aren't being told not to judge, lest we be judged) that there is sin in the church.
Setting aside for the moment that the church is full of sinners, which renders the previous contention Declamo nusquam, I must assume that the speaker means that the church has become to tolerant of sin in its midst.

  2. On shooting people and moral compasses

I just returned from spending four days in the Nevada desert at one of the premier shooting schools in the country. I learned a lot.

Not, mind you, that I wasn't very good with small arms already, but the quality of instruction raised my skill set more than a few notches.

I also confronted a few of my own doubts head-on.

I've never had to shoot at lifelike targets before, and I found it more difficult than I would have imagined. It has caused a reset of ...

Dicto increpito postremo (Write to call out to the future)

I’ve read Charles Carroll’s book on Leonardo da Vinci. It’s a fairly well written and worth the time, if you are interested in Leonardo to begin with. What strikes me about Leonardo is how he lives on in more than just his art. Leonardo wrote things down. His notebooks have done as much to make him immortal as his art. The genius that he was lives on because he took the time to preserve his ideas for the ages. ...

  4. TEOTWAWKI

I read many years ago that the answer to the old philosophical question:

"What happens when an Irresistible Force meets and Immovable Object?"

    is simple:

One of them ceases to be Irresistible or Immovable.

I think it was Asimov who wrote that, but I could be wrong.

I think the question itself is flawed in any number of ways.

It may even be the wrong question entirely.

What faces us in the world today ...

  5. Burnout a' Comin'

Looking back at this time in my life, I can't believe I didn't scream for help sooner. Was it pride? Ignorance? I don't know for sure. I suspect that the depression took hold so subtly that by the time this came out, I was to far gone to think rationally enough to realize I needed help.
Thank God somebody did, and intervened.

The guilt never ends. It overshadows everything. It steals the peace from every quiet moment, and dulls the effects of any momentary

  6. From my upcoming Novel "Uphill"

The opening sequence from the first chapter of my new Novel "Uphill"

“C'mon kid, hang on, sweetie, help is coming!”

Jake looked down at the tiny figure lying limp on the wet carpet. Her long blond hair soaked and matted around an expressionless purple face. She was cold, so very cold. Her flesh felt stiff, like a half-thawed piece of meat. He could see her ribs right through her almost translucent skin. Jake tasted bile in the back of his ...

  7. Reflections at the Graveside

My father-in-law passed away a while ago. We had a rather tempestuous relationship, to say the very least. I knew him for more than 30 years, and in that time I watched as alcohol and bitterness ate away at his soul and body until there was little left functioning of either one.
I had to leave town while he was in the ICU. I stepped in to say goodbye. He greeted me weakly with the tenderest and most genuine smile I had ever seen on his face. He wanted to know if I liked my new job, and seemed

  9. I was walking down the hall one day

I was walking down the hall one day last year. I was walking fast, as I always do. At work when I have to go somewhere I am always in a hurry. I work in a hospital.

There was an old woman in the hall, a patient. She was moving slowly, using her walker for support. It was plain to see that every step was an effort of will over weariness. She was tiny; the top of her white-haired head didn't stand as far from the ground as my chest.

I passed her on the right, slowing a ...

  10. More Important than Money

One of my patients several years ago was a man in his late 80's. His health was failing rapidly, and he knew he didn't have many days left. It was said that he was a millionaire.
Near the end he was asked if there was anyone we could call, and he said no. I know that he had grown children and even grandchildren, but there was nobody there for him. He told one of the nurses about two days before he died that he had spent his whole life making himself rich and letting his wife raise the kids. ...
