Fear is one of the most important human emotions. Some try to avoid this state as much as possible, and others enjoy being terrified. To obtain emotions, a modern man has a lot of sources, from various literature, theater, movies, horror online slots, and video games. Here are the most terrible games, where you can test yourself.

Cry of Fear
Cry of Fear is out on Steam as a free standalone game. Everything aims to scare the player in every way possible. And at this point, a very important component of horror is attention to detail. The more details you notice, the more tension you have to move on. And there is a lot to move, the game has a decent storyline and five endings in single-player and two in multiplayer.

Cry of Fear doesn't allow you to relax, to realize what happened and think about the way forward. It adds a thrill to the overall picture with an excellent sound design. The transition from calm, melancholic melodies to crazy screams perfectly plays into the atmosphere, complemented by all sorts of rustles, creaks and ominous breathing.

The short, yet brilliant creation of Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro has impressed many gamers. The project extremely skillfully plays around with claustrophobia, then immediately locks the player in a time loop. The location is only one - a corridor with a bathroom, but this did not prevent it from creating a terrifying atmosphere.

The creators don't just induce claustrophobia, but slowly plunge you into a phantom comfort zone, then abruptly knock you out with a sudden event. Time after time walking through the same place you start to memorize the location of objects and lighting, and then something starts to change. As was the case in Silent Hill: The Room, where the save zone gradually changes and with it the sense of calmness is lost. As you progress, absolutely everything will start to freak you out, including your footsteps, the rumble of the wind, and the swaying of the lamp, which seemed so pleasant at the beginning of the game. What's more, even in the pause menu you don't feel safe, and for good reason.

Unfortunately, that's where the interactive teaser ended. Due to Kojima and Konami differences, we'll never know what the full-fledged project would have looked like.

Silent Hill
The endless streets filled with fog and mysterious creatures were perfectly complemented by an eerie soundtrack, which we never managed to surpass in the next parts of Silent Hill series.

The first part of Silent Hill was released back in 1999 and that may put off many gamers. The game looks fantastic, but the visuals pale in comparison to the fantastic soundtrack that underlines absolutely everything that is happening in the game. The creators of Silent Hill rarely use screamers, preferring the oppressive silence. The atmosphere is the main horrifying factor which forces the player to listen to the scary noises and at the same time unravel the tangle of noisy plot.

Forbidden Siren
The next place is occupied by Forbidden Siren. It's an extremely difficult and scary game in every possible sense. A lot of gamers after a few hours gave up trying to understand this game, just because it is not clear at all. Japanese horror games are a separate art form that defies monumental pillars of logic.

Forbidden Siren is terrifying in its mysteriousness. The game's story resembles a huge puzzle made up of thousands of puzzles with no connecting keys. Even if you pass the game completely and find all the archive files, that is really difficult, it is not enough to show the whole picture. Moreover, some pieces of the puzzle are hidden on other sites, in the letters sent out by the developers, inside flash games, as well as on mysterious resources where mysterious phenomena are discussed, like in the SCP Foundation.

SCP: Containment Breach
Creepy creatures are present in almost every horror game, but what about mysterious objects that are dangerous just by their existence? SCP: Containment breach grew out of the online encyclopedia SCP Foundation, which collected the strangest artifacts in the world, their features and conditions. Under the definition of "artifact" could be any object, place, humanoid, or even an intangible entity. It sounds crazy, which makes SCP: Containment breach frightening with the number of incomprehensible objects, each of which represents a particular phobia.

The purpose of SCP:Containment breach is to escape from the organization's containment area in the midst of a massive breach of those very anomalous objects. As you pass, you will unlock the abilities of various SCPs, while making your way to the exit. Some objects will help you, some will reveal themselves at a certain moment, but the rest will hunt you down and morally prepare you for death.

Phasmophobia
Phasmophobia is an extremely rare representative of the horror genre, designed exclusively for cooperative games, which surprisingly only adds spice. In this game, as in a similar program on Discovery, a group of players must check out an anomalous place, figure out what kind of ghost inhabits it and, if possible, take a picture-proof. It sounds interesting, but it's not scary at all. The horror comes when you interact directly with paranormal things.

Phasmophobia silences you at just the right moment, because all the sounds coming from your microphone can make the ghost angry. In addition, communication with other players should also only take place in-game voice chat, otherwise the meaning of the sound mechanics is lost.

Fatal Frame 2
Unlike most paranormal horror games, Fatal Frame 2 seamlessly introduces world exploration and story progression. There are no side stories per se, but all of the events, notes, and flashbacks are interconnected. The result is a huge tangle that needs to be unraveled right during gameplay, rather than a cursory look at the notes on the thematic wiki.

Fatal Frame 2 not only boasts two beautiful Japanese girls in the leading roles but also plenty of creepy ghosts, various puzzles, an interesting combat system, and of course a terrific soundtrack. It is thanks to the sound that the oppressive atmosphere is achieved. In the howling wind, you can hear the screams, groans, barely audible crying and sometimes even heavy breathing along with the Easter eggs from the creators. Fatal Frame 2 is definitely worth a look, especially if this is your first time hearing about it.

Visage
Unlike all recent horror games, Visage seeks to show horror from a different perspective. It's more like a horror anthology, filled with different stories that intertwine to form a single line.

The dark entities that inhabit the mansion are drawn by the madness of the main character. The more often you see nightmares, the more attention the ghosts get. And once the horrors out of your head come true, Visage turns from a gradually pent-up horror to a fast-paced action game where the character's life is at stake. The project is memorable for its puzzles, item retrieval, creepy looks and great soundtrack. A dose of adrenaline is assured even for avid fans of the genre.
