Transylvanian/Romanian GEDmatch Results

After similar threads for Romania's Moldavia + Republic of Moldova and Wallachia (Muntenia + Oltenia), it is time to take a look at the genetic profile in Transylvania.

Transylvania, in its broadest term, and the one that I'm using for the purpose of this thread, encompasses the historic regions of:

• Central and Eastern parts - Transylvania proper
• Northwestern - Maramures
• Western - Crisana
• Southwestern - Banat

Are you sure Ardelean, Maramures isn't mixed? He is 39% and no other unmixed Transilvanian in the list scores more than 30%.

Yes, I think the same, but I don't have any proofs in this case. The county should also be changed to Satu Mare. I'll fix that in the next update.

In the past, religion used to segregate people, so Romanians generally didn't mix with Hungarians and the mountainous terrain additionally helped to create a barrier between the two. Nowadays it's obviously different.

all the northwestern area of Maramuresh county is Rusyn territory, Rusyn/Hutsul villages. in Sighet there's a full Ukrainian-language high-school for those Rusyns. also in Maramures it's the seat of the Union of the Ukrainians in Romania and also the seat of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Romania. my home village is in the Maramures-Bucovina Ukrainian-inhabited continuum in Romania.

as I was explaining elsewhere, the people in the villages are Ukrainian ethnics but whenever one of them moves away he voluntarily Romanianizes, sometimes not even mentioning to friends that in his home village people speak Ukrainian. so you can get these half-Ukrainian Romanians with one Ukrainian parent, and for example if the father is Romanian you will think where does he get his Baltic from, since he has Romanian last name, but it's the Ukrainian mother maybe. I've known plenty of cases in Cluj and Suceava as well like this. of course, maybe it's not the case here, but just to let you know of your Russkie brothers from the Carpathians in Romania.

"Ukrainians (including Hutsuls and other Rusyns) - 6.77% (or 31,234)"

the real number is maybe double, people usually avoid declaring themselves Ukrainian, they fear of ties with Russia or not to have legal consequences (out of ignorance and poor information from the state). it's an entirely rural area.

Maramures is the most Slavic admixed region in Transylvania, in which mixing has been ongoing since the Middle Ages till today.

Which towns exactly in Maramureș? My last name came from north central Maramures in the 12th/13th century but has no ties to Ukrainians.

How many will be in Suceava and Botoșani?

Transylvania proper Romanians seems pretty close to Wallachians, correct me if wrong?

They are intermediate between Wallachians and Moldavians. Look for the averages at the bottom.

Intermediate, I think only Southern Transylvanians are close to Wallachians, these ones from the far north (some of them) score high Baltic and low East Med, and look like Moldo/Ukro mixes from RM.

Both Moldavian averages are similar.
Aspirin told me Moldavians are a different ethnic group, so I think they should treat the 8 counties as the Irish Republicans treat the 6 counties aka Northern Ireland :cool:

We are similar to those in Romania genetically, but culturally there are regional differences. That's normal.

No idea, as I never asked, but if I were to guess, I'd say a mix of Wallachia with Transylvania or Moldavia, where Wallachian samples were dominant.

Botosani apart from a couple of villages is left to historical population only. a best friend is from such a village where they all got Ukrainian last names and the situation is: grandparents spoke Ukr, parents understand it and spoke it minimally, maybe when they didn't need to be understood, and kids (those 25-40 years old) don't speak it at all. these now have their own kids who probably won't even know their greatgrandparents spoke Ukr. and this happened across Botosani county in the past decades. anyway in Botosani from the start there was this situation of Ruthenian enclaves, the villages were scattered, not compact, so they had neighbour Romanian (Moldovan) villages with which they mixed (parents generation still mostly married in neighbour villages, not farther).


Suceava had 8,514 officially at the census but as I've explained on my class/pass thread recently, it faces some strange opposition to census. over 90% of the Ukrainians on there are from remote mountain area of Hutsulschyna and they have strong local identity (Hutsuls) so they refuse to call themselves Ukrainian at the census and don't call themselves Hutsul either (at the census), because this way they would be counted as Ukrainian officially. they've got their Hutsul Union that is more like an ONG/cultural union, no political recognition. because of Romania-Russia relations people fear of being associated with Russians (East Slavs). they do speak the language in their villages, have partial Ukrainian language schooling and bilingual Ukrainian/Romanian road signs but you get awkward situations where villages like Breaza (all-Ukrainian/Hutsul) have 0 (zero) Ukrainians at the census. if you stop now there to buy something at a store or enter a bar there no one speaks Romanian (between themselves I mean, otherwise they do speak native-level Romanian if they need it with Romanians, like any other minority in Romania, including most Hungarians).

I remember how at county-level contests during high-school we immediately made friends when we gathered in Suceava or other place, the youth from Ukrainian-speaking villages, and that's when I was surprised to see Ukrainian youth from outside the mountains (near Suceava) still speaking it natively, and some of those villages show nothing (<100 or so) in the census. another good example is Milisauti, which is a town now I think, where many people speak Ukr but are Romanian at the census. I met a young doctor our age from there, I mentioned that I know the village was historically Ukr and he was able to speak in native local dialect without any problem. I had asked him about roots because of his last name, of Boyko origin like mine.

the rest of Ukrainians are in Dobrudja (native Hohols) and in Banat (not native to Banat, all are Rusyns and Hutsuls transferred by Communists from Maramures and Bucovina).

you can check the Union's website for events and such - with Russian you should be able to understand Ukrainian, they're dialects of the same Rus' language after all xD

also, keep in mind that the Maramures-Suceava Ukrainian settlement is a continuum, villages are not scattered among Romanian villages like in Rep. Moldova so the mixing only started very recently, in the last generation (my age), otherwise the people had their entire region of a few hundred villages and hamlets to marry in. and we had yearly gatherings that now are transformed into generic festivals but back then were to discuss business (cattle and hay and potato xD) and marriage and see relatives and friends from far villages.

Neither would I, but it's her 100%, as it's traced via her personal email address from GEDmatch. She's a tour guide in Timisoara and uses that email address on her personal website.

Yes, really great example how we should never guess origins based on phenotype. I saw example of very non white looking Brits who ended up fully Isles genetically posted on Reddit.

I know some people here in Romania (and I've heard it from some foreigners also) that think that if they are blond or look a bit German or Slavic they ARE that thing. common people don't understand they're still genetically most similar to their co-ethnics, even if one is blond and one is brunet or even olive-skinned etc. I've got many times people saying wow but I look more Russian than you, you cannot be Russkie xD so if they are NeoDanubian or such, which is very popular in northeast Romania, they think they really are more Slavic than brunet Ukrainians/Russian/etc.

a mixed colleague that got the looks from her dad was saying us how she has all genes from dad and nothing from mom, with a sort of pride to it and didn't accept that the visible, the phenotype, is so so tiny chunk of her DNA and that she's around half her mom's side genetics too - she even got offended hearing that and didn't accept it xD

Typical Balkan ignorance. My dad say he can't be Slavic because he isn't Baltid, he doesn't understand he is mostly Slavic genetically because he isn't Russian looking.
Or for example if somebody is heavy dinaric he/she will be called Vlach, German looking person will be declared Norse by origin etc.

LOL. All of these people have similar DNA and ancestors, phenotype is just a lottery and in one person one part of genome will be expressed, in other second etc.
