The migration of Macedonians to Bulgaria is a recent phenomenon, in the last 15 years, for economical reasons (work, study). Before that, there was a migration of Bulgarians from Macedonia to Bulgaria. My family viewed themselves as regionally Macedonian and ethnically Bulgarian, and probably so did most of the people who went to Bulgaria, otherwise they would have gone to Yugoslavia, like your family did.
The results would have been pretty much the same if there wasn't any migration, Bulgarians with no ancestry from Macedonia score similar, so do Romanians from Wallachia, Montenegrins and some Albanians.
