The annextion of the Valadas (and perhaps of the whole south Piemont) to France will be the death of valadois occitan.
Since the number of speakers is slightly rising year by year, it wouldn't be a good thing.

Bygone 'culture' of the plebs during the 1980s (where the story takes place, in a flashback). I forgot, the film won some prizes in Cannes and got translated to French. I don't like the writer who wrote the book though (his only memorable work)

De Helaasheid der Dingen is about a broken father-son relationship, poor village life, the hurtful disdain the middle class show toward the bottom of society, the tragedy of alcoholism, 'marginality', etc...
Not a bad work of fiction if you ask me. And if I can believe my father, such people were still pretty common a few decades ago, but are rare now. The new bottom layer of society today are mostly of immigrant background.
There are no "New Kids" types in NL? Or is it a myth. In the 90's we used to say "une coiffure de hollandais" for a ridiculous mullet and the eventual blond mustache or rather peach fuzz (also fancied by German football players). The trend was quite different back then from what is shown in "De Helaasheid", they look more like hipsters than proles to me.
These days Flemish culture is strongly middle class and different from what it used to be in the 80's (the New Beat era, with "Confetti's" and the likes, then the club culture with 2 Unlimited, was the Belgian/Flemish version of British proletarian culture of the Thatcher era; I don't know if these kind of things still exist). Eighties trends were really horrible.
