Serbs actually left west Slavonia after operation Flash. East Slavonia was peacefully reintegrated in 1998 and one of conditions was to leave Serbian population there.
I think east Slavonia may be darker because it had big Danube Swabian population (west Slavonia did not),and after Germans were expelled lot ofcolonists from dinaric alps moved in the region.
Both Serbs and Croats. This happened after WW2. Due to hunger for example lot of Dalmatian and Herzegovians were moved there.
But recently no influx from south came. Now people are leaving Slavonia, you are more likely to find Slavonian in Rijeka or Split than the opposite.
