Yeah, I've briefly read about that. In Russia where I grew up Moldovan just means from the Republic, just like Azerbaijani (that fact that there is also Southern Azerbaijan in Iran is not widely known).

Well yes, everyone born in R. Moldova is Moldovan by citizenship and hence Moldovan in my book. But in this thread, I'm concerned mainly about those who are born to Romance-speaking parents, because we want to compare with those from Romania. The main part of the Moldavian principality was on the territory of Romania, while this territory became more important only recently, during the Russian Empire and then the Soviet Union. People in the Republic are undoubtedly connected to those in Romania, given shared surnames. I doubt that the migration happened from East to West historically. It's only in the past 30 years that it started to swing from East to West.
Do these maps help to understand why there are regional differences? In short, the Central rural region is most homogenous, North has been historically mixed with Ukrainians and South with Bulgarians/Gagauz.
