Yes, I'm Y too but was very influenced by my older brother who is Generation X. So I heard a lot of New Wave and played early computers like Spectrum or Commodore 64 as a child because of him, which is linked to Gen X.
BTW, those who belong to other non-Anglo cultural spheres (Brazil, Russia, China etc...), could you share us the cultural references (TV shows, bands, political eras, historical events...) your generation could immediately relate to within your country/cultural sphere?
I am Y but I can relate to X and to a lesser extent Z
I relate to both X and Y.

Well, as a child, probably the first person most of brazilians my age think of is Xuxa. She became famous dating Pelé, and later got her own TV show. She is still big here in Brazil, has many fans, and she used to host a children's tv show called "Xou da Xuxa" (Xuxa's show). There were also some sucessful children's movies she starred, like "Lua de Cristal" (Crystal Moon) and "Super Xuxa contra o baixo astral" (something like Super Xuxa against bad mood). I think later she had a show in Argentina too.
A compilation of some moments of her show:

I listened a lot to "Sandy & Junior".They are brother and sister, their father is a famous singer here, and they started singing as children. Very famous as well. She still sings, I don't know about him.

I watched cartoons like Care Bears, Dungeons & Dragons, Wildfire (loved this!), Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Get along gang, Captain Planet And The Planeteers, Smurfs, The Flintstones, Scooby Doo... They're not brazilian cartoons, so I guess many people here watched it too.
There was also a TV show I liked called "TV Colosso", with dog's dolls, or puppets, Idk hahahaha It portraid a TV channel, where only dogs were employed, directing, hosting, filming shows and stuff. Brazil had some really weird stuff in the 90's. You'll understand if you see Xuxa's (very few) clothes in her show, lol
I don't remember many political and historical events from my childhood, 'cause as a child I didn't really care. I remember very little about the (almost - he resigned so it would'nt happen) impeachment of president Collor, and Airton's Senna (great F1 pilot) tragic death. I also remember 1994's world cup, Brazil won, and everyone went to the streets to celebrate, it was a big party.
As a teenagers, I mostly listened to American bands/singers, so you'll know everything. I liked Madonna, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Hanson, N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, Destiny's Child, Mariah Carey, Guns n Roses, Aerosmith etc.
Regarding to brazilian music, I liked bands like Legião Urbana, Capital Inicial, Paralamas do Sucesso and singers like Marisa Montes. I'll link some videos of the music here.

There was also "axé music", we listened and danced to it a lot, it's a kind of music to dance, and there were fun coreographies everyone danced to, specially at the summer. There were many "micaretas", parties with axé music shows, and people went to dance. Some people actually went to kiss a lot of people, 'cause it was kind of "a thing" at micaretas, but I went only to dance, after all I had a boyfriend. Axe music still exist, but mostly in some states like Bahia, it's not such a trend anymore. I guess the biggest star from Axé music is the singer Ivete Sangalo. She is still huge here, really loved by the people, and this last week, at carnival, one of the samba schools paid homage to her, and it was really nice. Samba schools here have a huge parade at carnival, and they choose a subject to talk about and Ivete was the subject of "Grande Rio" school, they told her story. She participated on the parade and she was very touched by it.

ALso, there was this band called "Mamonas Assassinas". It was kind of a humour band, they used funny clothes and sang funny lyrics. They became really famous really fast in the 90's, a huge sucess. Than when they were at the top of their sucess, they died in an airplane crash. This I remember very clearly, it was really sad, everyone cried a lot, 'cause they were so young, funny and talented. Some would say disrespectful maybe too....
