Well it's easy to explain. Italy used to be like Sardinia in the past aka. West Med. and Western Balkans (Bosnia and Croatia) used to belong Exarchate of Ravenna in the Late Western part of Roman Empire, and it was
Latin dominated part in Ancient Rome.
However, when west collapsed, Eastern Part of Empire (incorrectly called Byzantium) took over Southern Regions like this:

Roman Empire in middle ages was usually ruled by Greek speaking Anatolian Syrian, Persian and Armenian population who were carriers of Eastern Mediterranean
and influence of their soldiers is noticeable today.
Also let's not forget Ottoman Empire which was Islamic Eastern Roman Empire that also spread Eastern Mediterranean.
That's why Northern Regions have more Western Mediterranean and Southern more Eastern Mediterranean
But generally Illyrians and Thracians used to have around 30~ + 30~ before Slavic DNA came.
